Cet ouvrage est le troisième et dernier volume entrepris par Albert Ayache sur le Mouvement syndical dans le Protectorat français du Maroc (1919-1956). Après 1943, les circonstances - la guerre, la captivité. Vichy - conduisirent l'auteur, qui jusqu'alors n'avait été que témoin, à s'engager activement. Membre du secrétariat de l'Union générale des Syndicats confédérés du Maroc (CGT) de 1947 à 1952, il participa, avec ses compagnons cégétistes, à la vie et aux luttes des travailleurs pendant la période dramatique où patronat et Résidence visaient à briser mouvement syndical et mouvement national. En tant que chercheur, Albert Ayache s'est appliqué à éclairer les différentes phases d'une évolution complexe, dominée par la naissance et le développement d'une classe nouvelle de salariés modernes au sein de la société marocaine traditionnelle. Il s'est également attaché à étudier les rapports de cette classe nouvelle avec une organisation syndicale importée, la CGT française. Seule cette dernière avait osé enfreindre l'interdit syndical jeté sur les travailleurs marocains par crainte de les voir s'affirmer, ce qu'ils firent cependant, puisqu'ils furent l'une des forces du mouvement syndical. Ce volume couvre la période 1949-1956 et démêle les péripéties d'un combat de libération avec toutes ses implications nationales et internationales et dont les centres furent le Maroc et la France.
