"Europe's current crisis is also a crisis of the European city. Economic, social, and political insecurities have changed our perception of territories, institutions, and forms of living, and have dramatically weakened the complex interactions within Europe. They have also compromised the reshaping of our physical landscape. Yet, the crisis is also creating new opportunities-for urban transformation, urban practices, and forms of participation. Based on case studies from Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, and Switzerland, Territories in Crisis describes the countless challenges faced by European Cities from historical, sociological, and economic perspectives and sets them in relation to existing and potential forms of urbanity. Territories in Crisis aims to develop a new European framework for architecture and urban planning in the era of crisis" -- OCLC.

The European tradition of urbanism has two main lines. The more influential of these clearly addresses the ?place? as the limit of architectural and urban design. We cannot conceive of life without profound roots in places. The other traditional line in urbanism gravitates around the ?body?. Although not as influential, it suggests a different approach to modern urbanism. The perspective developed here questions what happens in-between the ?body? and ?space?. To do this, the ?body? is understood as a transit channel between space and the urban project.0The book unfolds a critical reading of contemporary architectural design and urbanism and criticises the way design refers to ?space? using the ?body?. In doing so, it delves into the debates of architecture and urban planning of the eighties, as well as their ambiguous relationship with politics.

Achilleid written by Publius Papinius Statius and has been published by Liverpool University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Poetry categories.

Statius' Achilleid is perhaps the most remarkable of all Latin epic poems. Its project - to tell the whole life of Achilles - was cut short by the poet's untimely death. Yet the completed first book and the earliest part of the second have a charm and freshness matched only in some of Ovid's most lively and engaging work. The poem tells how the sea-nymph Thetis, in a vain attempt to save her son from his destined end in the Trojan war, hid him on the island of Scyros, disguised as a girl. There he fell in love with the beautiful Deidamia, but at the same time, with the idea of glory in war. His feminine disguise was eventually penetrated by Ulysses and Diomedes, who tricked him into exposure of his truly warlike aspirations. In relating this story Statius explores the nature of gender and the limits of the epic genre, while playfully and wittily positioning himself in the epic - and wider - poetic tradition. These themes are explored in a new introduction by Robert Cowan, which surveys the latest research on the poem. Its assessment, very much in the modern critical manner, contrasts with and complements the traditional textual and philological commentary by O.A.W. Dilke. The combination of these two distinct approaches will assist undergraduates and postgraduates in reading the text, and, at the same time, it will provide a valuable resource for the more advanced scholar.
