Les langues, au premier examen, quand on en aborde l'étude en vue d'en concevoir la systématique, laissent, chacune et toutes, une impression de multiplicité, de complication sans fin. Et cette marche à la simplicité ne se fait pas sans bien des détours. Ce n'est pas un cheminement aisé. C'est par des voies sinueuses et compliquées que de la multiplicité des conséquences visibles, le linguiste remonte à l'unité fondamentale des conditions, on pourrait presque dire, de la condition. Car tout ce qui se voit dans les langues, tout, absolument tout procède, en toute dernière analyse, de la double sollicitation à laquelle l'esprit humain est incessamment soumis, et qui lui vient par un côté, de l'universel, par l'autre côté, du singulier.

Ces conférences sont les premières qu'a données Gustave Guillaume à l'École Pratique des Hautes Études. Il traite de tous les problèmes sur lesquels a pu porter sa réflexion jusque là: il commence son étude par la genèse du mot en français et en chinois, genèse qui comporte un discernement et un entendement. Il passe à la flexion nominale, ses composantes et son évolution. Il s'étend ensuite longuement sur la catégorie du genre, celle du nombre et celle de la fonction et sur leur interférence. Il aborde alors le système verbo-temporel du français et s'attarde sur la théorie des modes (en particulier sur l'emploi du subjonctif), ainsi que sur la théorie de l'aspect. Il analyse en outre par le menu l'emploi des temps de l'indicatif (le présent, l'imparfait, le prétérit, le passé composé, le futur catégorique et le futur hypothétique) et traite, enfin, reprenant le Problème de l'article et sa solution dans la langue française (1919), de la nature et de l'emploi des articles un, le, du, en tenant compte des conditions sémantiques, morphologiques et syntaxiques.

The Sounds of Early Cinema is devoted exclusively to a little-known, yet absolutely crucial phenomenon: the ubiquitous presence of sound in early cinema. "Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre-arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The practice of mixing sounds with images differed widely, depending on the venue (the nickelodeon in Chicago versus the summer Chautauqua in rural Iowa, the music hall in London or Paris versus the newest palace cinema in New York City) as well as on the historical moment (a single venue might change radically, and many times, from 1906 to 1910).
