«L’utopia di oggi sarà la politica di domani»: con queste parole Emilio Sereni, allora ministro dell’Assistenza Post-bellica, interveniva al «Convegno per studi di assistenza sociale», tenutosi a Tremezzo nell’autunno del 1946, ben sintetizzandone lo spirito. Nel fervido clima dell’immediato dopoguerra, un nutrito gruppo di politici, studiosi ed esperti italiani e stranieri, riunito sulle rive del lago di Como, discusse a lungo i problemi del welfare e la necessità di riorganizzare l’assistenza, come elemento necessario per la rinascita democratica del paese. Come sostenne nella sua relazione Maria Comandini – che insieme al marito Guido Calogero fu una delle animatrici del Convegno – «l’assistenza sociale è una diversa forma di esercizio e di creazione della democrazia, cioè dell’attitudine degli uomini a risolvere da sé i propri problemi e a conquistare, in un’armonia collettiva, più larghe libertà di vita e migliori opportunità d’azione». In quel quadro veniva a delinearsi il ruolo dell’assistente sociale come figura professionale in grado di contribuire all’affermazione di una maggiore giustizia sociale. In questo volume sono raccolti saggi di storici, sociologi e assistenti sociali, che rievocano quel periodo e i contenuti del dibattito. Inoltre vengono ristampate le relazioni tenute al Convegno da Maria Comandini Calogero, Paolina Tarugi e Odile Vallin, le “pioniere” del servizio sociale italiano, di cui vengono ricostruite le vicende biografiche, attraverso documenti di archivio anche inediti e ricordi di familiari e collaboratori.
