Due storie narrate a capitoli alterni e che mai s’intersecano: quella dei due amanti che fuggono dalla società per chiudersi nel loro rapporto esclusivo e che nel tentativo d’interrompere una gravidanza finiscono con l’autodistruggersi; e quella del detenuto che durante la grande inondazione del Mississippi viene mandato in cerca di una partoriente aggrappata a un albero semisommerso, la trova, fa nascere il bambino, porta entrambi in salvo e poi, invece di darsi alla fuga, rientra nella monastica società del penitenziario. Estraneo a qualsiasi genere conosciuto, "Le palme selvagge" non ha mai cessato di suscitare interrogativi. Si tratta di due racconti autonomi, intercalati per una qualche audace trovata? Di due racconti sotterraneamente legati? O di un romanzo, ancorché anomalo? Interrogativi ai quali ha fornito una risposta definitiva Kundera: «La "Sonata opera 111" [di Beethoven] mi fa pensare a "Palme selvagge" di Faulkner, in cui si alternano un racconto d’amore e la storia di un evaso, due soggetti che non hanno nulla in comune, non un personaggio, e neanche una qualunque percettibile affinità di motivi o di temi: una composizione che non può servire da modello a nessun altro romanziere, che può esistere una volta e basta, che è arbitraria, non raccomandabile, ingiustificabile – ed è ingiustificabile perché dietro di essa si avverte un es muß sein che rende superflua ogni giustificazione». "Le palme selvagge" è apparso per la prima volta nel 1939.
