Tour à tour tolérées, interdites, marginalisées ou acceptées, les minorités religieuses du Québec ont marqué l’espace, la mémoire et la société de façons diverses mais de manière constante. La représentation traditionnelle d’un Québec monolithique franco-catholique ou anglo-protestant est aujourd’hui nuancée par une meilleure connaissance de la présence historique de collecti-vités différenciées telles les protestants francophones, les communautés juives et les églises orthodoxes. L’existence et l’essor de ces minorités religieuses se manifestent dans l’architecture et l’organisation territoriale, dans certaines des grandes structures institutionnelles, tels le système d’éducation ou de santé, mais aussi dans la mémoire populaire. L’ensemble de ces traces, complexe et hétérogène, constitue un patrimoine unique mais fragile : les éléments architecturaux sont démolis ou recyclés sans identification préalable ; les archives et objets sont dispersés suite à la fermeture d’institutions ; les rites, les traditions musicales et les savoir-faire disparaissent avec le vieillissement des porteurs de mémoire. En dépit de son importance, cet héritage est peu connu et sa conservation est souvent aléatoire. La sauvegarde du patrimoine des minorités religieuses pose un problème actuel. Pour la première fois au Québec, un groupe de spécialistes du patrimoine, chercheurs, gestionnaires, professionnels du terrain, s’est penché sur la question, lors d’un colloque organisé par l’Institut du patrimoine culturel de l’Université Laval en collaboration avec la Faculté de théologie et de sciences religieuses, tenu à Montréal, du 17 au 19 mai 2006. Riche de contributions multidisciplinaires et d’approches diverses, cet ouvrage collectif propose une réflexion sur la situation patrimoniale présente des minorités religieuses et examine les conditions de préservation et de mise en valeur de ce patrimoine vulnérable.

Over the last decade there has been ongoing discussion about the place of religion in Québécois society, particularly following the proposed Charter of Quebec Values in 2013. The essays in Everyday Sacred emerged from this active and often tense period of debate. Revitalizing an awareness of how people encounter, create, and employ religion in everyday life, contributors to this volume explore communities’ networks of beliefs, traditions, and relationships. Through broad comparisons beyond the Quebec context, contributors look at African Pentecostal congregations, an Iraqi Jewish community in Montreal, a rural Catholic parish on the Saint Lawrence River, and Tewehikan drumming in Wemotaci. They also examine wayside crosses, places of pilgrimage and devotion, debates on the regulation of the hijab, and the place of Montreal Spiritualists and transhumanists in the religious landscape. Seeking a holistic definition of Québécois religion, Everyday Sacred considers religious and secular identity, pluralism, the bodily and material aspects of religion, the impact of gender on community and the public sphere, and the rise of hybridity, sociality, and new technologies in transnational and online networks, in order to uncover the transmission of practices and beliefs from one generation to another.
