This collective volume explores clause-linkage strategies in a cross-linguistic perspective with greater emphasis on subordination. Part I presents some theoretical reassessment of syntactic terminologies and distinctive criteria for subordination, as well as typological methods based on sets of variables and statistics allowing cross-linguistic comparability. Part II deals with strategies relating to clause-chaining, conjunctive conjugations, converbial constructions, masdars. Part III centers on the interaction between the syntax, pragmatics, and semantics of clause-linking and subordination, in relation to informa-tional structure, to referential hierarchy, and correlative constructions. Part IV presents insights in the clause-linking and subordinating functions of some T.A.M. markers, verbal inflectional morphology and conjugation systems, which may also interact with informa-tional hierarchy, via the backgrounding effects and lack of illocutionary force of some aspect and mood forms. The volume is of particular interest to linguists and typologists working on clause-linkage systems and on the interface between syntax, pragmatics, and semantics.

This collection of articles takes up the issue of Contact Morphology raised by David Wilkins in 1996. In the majority of contact-related studies, morphology is at best a marginal topic. According to the extant borrowing hierarchies, bound morphology is copied only rarely, if at all, because morphological copies presuppose long-term intensive contact with prior massive borrowing of content words and function words. On the other hand, especially in studies of morphological change, contact is often identified as the decisive factor which triggers the disintegration of morphological systems. However, it remains to be seen whether these two standard treatments of morphology in contact situations exhaust the phenomenology of Contact Morphology. The 14 papers of the present volume shed new light on the behavior of morphology under the conditions of language contact. Fresh empirical data from 40 languages world-wide are presented and new theory-based concepts are discussed. Morphologies in Contact is a first in the history of both morphology and language contact studies. It is meant to mark the beginning of an international research program which explores the entire range of aspects connected to morphologies in contact and thus, paves the way for a full-blown Contact Morphology qua linguistic discipline.

Cet ouvrage propose un examen systematique de l'ensemble des interjections grecques attestees dans les tragedies et les comedies de l'epoque classique. L'analyse minutieuse se fonde sur une methode innovante integrant les acquis de la philologie a ceux de la linguistique pragmatique (notamment les criteres de situation typique d'enonciation et d'association preferentielle entre actes de langage, la repartition en cinq domaines d'actes illocutoires, les usages parodiques ou ironiques - frequents dans l'enonciation comique - qui peuvent aller jusqu'a l'inversion du semantisme). Cette etude a permis de parvenir a des conclusions neuves, a la fois pour l'etablissement des proprietes de la classe et sur le sens precis de chaque interjection. Pour certaines d'entre elles, l'heterogeneite de leurs emplois incite a distinguer, derriere une facade graphique unique, plusieurs interjections dont la prononciation devait differer par la courbe melodique, la duree ou la tension d'emission de leurs phonemes. La structuration phonique des interjections s'avere ainsi etre un domaine a part de la phonologie de la langue. D'autre part, l'etude montre qu'il existe des interjections pour chacun des cinq domaines d'actes illocutoires: beaucoup sont de valeur expressive ou directive, mais quelques-unes sont declaratives, promissives ou assertives. Tout ceci conduit a une definition precise de la classe des interjections, definition dont les principes depassent la langue grecque, et a un questionnement sur les limites d'une classe de mots ouverte a plus d'un titre. Cette description des interjections du grecque classique, qui permet de definir la signification et la tonalite des interventions des personnages de theatre, interessera les specialistes de la tragedie et de la comedie grecques, mais aussi les lecteurs des dialogues de Platon ou de Lucien. Cet ouvrage sera egalement utile pour les chercheurs en linguistique generale, meme non hellenistes, l'auteur s'etant efforcee de leur rendre son propos accessible en traduisant systematiquement les enonces etudies et en translitterant les mots et notions linguistiques du grec.
