Dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle, le paysage sublime est le lieu commun du paysage romantique. Dans sa redéfinition du sublime comme expérience, le romantisme va davantage développer une esthétique du paysage qu'une topique de la puissance naturelle (le volcan, la cataracte, l'orage ou la tempête) ou de la représentation de l'infini (Dieu, la mer, la montagne). Cette poétique du paysage peut s'interpréter dans le sens d'une révélation du Chaos : magnifique confusion et profusion de l'existant, mais aussi radicale négativité de l'être. C'est ainsi que le paysage sublime ouvre sur une philosophie de la nature qui en révèle la fondamentale indétermination ontologique. La composition du paysage trouve ainsi son écho dans la construction du personnage. et notamment dans la figure du héros romantique, taraudé par une indétermination native, hanté par une liberté inconditionnelle et radicale. Pour le romantisme, le paysage naturel n'est donc pas étranger à l'investissement éthique ou à la contemplation métaphysique, c'est même au sein de cette grande nature correspondant à sa démesure que l'homme romantique va définir son projet : élan génial et enthousiaste, révolte ou renoncement ?

L'objet principal de cette thèse consiste en l'étude de paysages romantiques dans leur rapport à une expérience du sublime, au sein de la littérature française du XIXème siècle. Le paysage sublime prend naissance dans une tradition antique et rhétorique du lieu d'horreur qui se conceptualise en sublime sombre à la fin du XVIIIème siècle avec la redécouverte préromantique et romantique de références littéraires et picturales fondamentales (Dante, Milton notamment) et sous l'effet d'une interprétation sensualiste (Burke, Diderot notamment) du sublime classique issu de la traduction par Boileau du Traité du Sublime de Longin. Le romantisme va utiliser le sentiment du sublime pour redonner un sens organique à la nature et au sujet connaissant dans le cadre d'un idéalisme objectif et subjectif qui met en place en rapport analogique l'objet et le sujet: le sublime est ainsi l'instrument de cette harmonie paradoxale puisqu'elle se révèle dans un perpétuel déchirement de l'expérience sensible.

This book analyses the dynamic relationship between art and subjective consciousness, following a phenomenological, pragmatist and enactive approach. It brings out a new approach to the role of the body in art, not as a speculative object or symbolic material but as the living source of the imaginary. It contains theoretical contributions and case studies taken from various artistic practices (visual art, theatre, literature and music), Western and Eastern, the latter concerning China, India and Japan. These contributions allow us to nourish the debate on embodied cognition and aesthetics, using theory–philosophy, art history, neuroscience–and the authors’ personal experience as artists or spectators. According to the Husserlian method of “reduction” and pragmatist introspection, they postulate that listening to bodily sensations–cramps, heartbeats, impulsive movements, eye orientation–can unravel the thread of subconscious experience, both active and affective, that emerge in the encounter between a subject and an artwork, an encounter which, following John Dewey, we deem to be a case study for life in general. Ce livre analyse la relation dynamique entre l’art et la conscience subjective, selon une approche phénoménologique, pragmatiste et enactive. Il vise à faire émerger une nouvelle approche du rôle du corps dans l’art, non pas comme objet spéculatif ou matériau symbolique, mais comme source vivante de l’imaginaire. Les contributions théoriques et les études de cas sont prises à diverses pratiques artistiques (arts visuels, théâtre, littérature et musique), occidentales et orientales, ces dernières concernant la Chine, l’Inde et le Japon. Selon la méthode husserlienne de « réduction », en écho à l’introspection pragmatiste, les textes témoignent que l’écoute des sensations corporelles – crampes, battements de cœur, mouvements pulsionnels, orientation des yeux – mises en jeu par l’œuvre, permet de dénouer le fil de l’expérience inconsciente, à la fois kinesthésique et affective, qui émerge dans la rencontre entre un sujet et une œuvre d’art, une rencontre comprise, à la manière de Dewey, comme un cas d’école de la vie en général.

Scapeland: Writing the Landscape from Diderot’s Salons to the Postmodern Museum is a comparative, interdisciplinary study tracing theories of the sublime and a history of spectatorship from Diderot’s eighteenth-century French Salons, through art criticism by Baudelaire and Breton, to Jean-François Lyotard’s postmodern exhibition Les Immatériaux. In the Salons, an exploration of the painted landscape becomes an encounter with both the limits of representation and the infinite possibilities of fiction. Baudelaire and Breton explore similar limits in their work, set against the backdrop of the modern city. For them, as for Diderot, the attempt to render visual objects in narrative language leads to the development of new literary forms and concerns. Lyotard’s concept of the “postmodern museum” frames the sublime encounter, once again, in terms that expressly evoke Diderot’s verbal rendering of painted spaces as a personal promenade. According to Lyotard, Diderot “ouvre, par écrit, les surfaces des tableaux comme les portes d’une exposition.. . . Le moment semble être venu de jeter, sur le romantisme également, un regard moins partisan. La définition qu’en donnèrent les anti-romantiques du début de ce siècle, sans être en tout point inexacte ni périmée, est unilatérale. À côté des traits sur lesquels elle est fondée, il faut en envisager d’autres qui leur faisaient équilibre : le respect des activités rationnelles de l’esprit, la conscience du caractère technique des arts, un sens renouvelé et sincère du divin, une attitude profondément éthique devant la vie, et la volonté active de contribuer à la régénérescence de l’humanité. Mais comme pour le classicisme, il nous semble désirable de réserver l’épithète « romantique » aux plus hautes expressions de ce type de culture. Dans l’histoire de la littérature anglaise, on appelle « pré-romantiques » ces manifestations de la sensibilité collective qui illustrent l’aspiration vers une culture nouvelle, sans toutefois arriver à une pleine conscience de son contenu ni à une pleine réalisation de ses virtualités. Ne serait-il pas normal d’appliquer l’épithète « post-romantique » au long déclin au cours duquel le romantisme, ayant perdu sa vigueur, sa cohésion et le secret de son unité intérieure, se dégrade dans l’excès et la contradiction ? C’est pour cette raison que notre étude s’appuie en ordre principal sur les écrits des quatre représentants les plus éminents du romantisme anglais à son apogée : Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats et Shelley.
