Emmanuel Mounier est le père fondateur du personnalisme qu'il aborde comme un renouvellement de la pensée du XXe siècle. Cet ouvrage en retrace les grands axes et remonte à la matrice inaugurale de sa philosophie. Après en avoir restitué le noyau dur, l'auteur se propose de mesurer les interactions et les sources théologico-philosophiques essentielles. Mounier articule en effet un enseignement très marqué avec Descartes, Pascal et Bergson. Il relie l'idéalisme au rationalisme et une théologie issue d'une philosophie autonome détachée de l'enseignement théologique. Sa lecture marquante de Péguy est frappée par une crise de la Modernité qui le situe entre le spirituel et le temporel. La rencontre avec Landsberg avive sa sensibilité à l'urgence de l'engagement. Son orientation existentielle et non existentialiste le condamne à refuser une « philosophie chrétienne ». Ainsi émergeront les concepts de « personne » et de la « communauté » d'inspiration augustinienne.

Le personnalisme d'Emmanuel Mounier (1905-1950) peut-il répondre aux exigences de la modernité ? Cette thèse montre le dialogue de cette philosophie avec celles de son époque : dialogues constitutifs (Bergson, Pascal, Descartes) ; dialogues " politiques " (idéalisme, marxisme, fascisme) ; dialogues de la " maturité " (Nietzsche, Freud, Sartre, Heidegger). Cette exploration établit la richesse du personnalisme mais aussi l'articulation problématique entre christianisme et philosophie en son sein. Sont ensuite dégagés son positionnement souhaitable et les conditions de sa mise en œuvre dans la modernité. Ses concepts centraux (la personne et la communauté) doivent être réélaborés. Sa méthode, attentive au pluralisme, mérite d'être prolongée. Au plan pratique enfin, le personnalisme peut participer au renouvellement du discours sur la démocratie et à la réorientation du rôle du christianisme dans la société actuelle.
