"L'histoire de l'exercice du pouvoir municipal, au Moyen Âge et à l'époque moderne, est en plein renouvellement aujourd'hui. Ce colloque international (Rennes, 2010) a donc pour ambition de faire le point sur ce sujet, tout en ouvrant un certain nombre de pistes. Il le fait en se penchant sur la situation de villes françaises très variées, de la Bretagne à la Bourgogne, mais aussi de Dunkerque au Languedoc, depuis le XIIIe siècle jusqu'au règne de Louis XVI. Au cours des siècles, e pouvoir s'y exerce dans un cadre institutionnel diversifié, mais non sans traits communs, même s'il doit faire face à des conjonctures changeantes. On s'est attaché ici à observer comment les municipalités urbaines tentent de prendre en charges les intérêts - parfois différents, voire contradictoires - de leurs concitoyens, en lien avec d'autres autorités, aussi bien religieuses que politiques. Dans ce cadre, elles cherchent à la fois à incarner une dignité, à garantir des privilèges et à rendre des services, au quotidien et dans les moments de crise. Quatre angles d'attaque ont donc été retenus pour mieux cerner le pouvoir municipal en action : son fonctionnement tel que le révèle l'analyse des rapports entre les pouvoirs et leur mise en scène dans la ville; les fonctions multiples exercées dans l'espace urbain; la participation des citoyens à l'exercice de ce pouvoir; les conflits suscités par son exercice, qu'il s'agisse de rivalités internes ou de confrontations avec d'autres instances de pouvoir. Tout au long de l'ouvrage, court donc la question des fondements de l'ordre dans la ville. L'édition des débats qui ont eu lieu lors du colloque fait ressortir convergences et divergences entre historiens et montre tout ce que peut apporter un échange scientifique à la réflexion collective."--Page 4 de la couverture.
