This handbook provides a comprehensive and thorough survey of our current insights into the diversity and unity found across the 6000 languages of this planet. The 125 articles include inter alia chapters on the patterns and limits of variation manifested by analogous structures, constructions and linguistic devices across languages (e.g. word order, tense and aspect, inflection, color terms and syllable structure). Other chapters cover the history, methodology and the theory of typology, as well as the relationship between language typology and other disciplines. The authors of the individual sections and chapters are for the most part internationally known experts on the relevant topics. The vast majority of the articles are written in English, some in French or German. The handbook is not only intended for the expert in the fields of typology and language universals, but for all of those interested in linguistics. It is specifically addressed to all those who specialize in individual languages, providing basic orientation for their analysis and placing each language within the space of what is possible and common in the languages of the world.

Heidegger And Leibniz written by R. Cristin and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-07-31 with Philosophy categories.

Cristin (philosophy, U. of Trieste) begins by analyzing the concept of foundation-reason as a different option made by the two German philosophers. He characterizes Heidegger's critique as a reflection on the meaning and essence of reason and the foundation, representing a considerable displacement of them such that infallible theoretical mechanisms and indubitable phenomenal substrata not longer exist. He then discusses what the two think about thinking, and suggests that they may come close to agreeing on what Heidegger calls meditating. Finally he ponders the hypothesis that Heidegger's thinking on Being contains an original mingling of rational and meditating thought that echoes inchoate concepts in Leibniz. No subject index. The Wisdom Of Aristotle written by Carlo Natali and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-04-19 with Philosophy categories.

This is a profound study of Aristotle’s concept of phronesis, or practical wisdom. Carlo Natali critically reconsiders Aristotle’s famous doctrine of contemplation, relating it to contemporary theories of the good life. In Book X of the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle appears to claim that the best possible life is that which is engaged in theoria, usually translated “contemplation.” Quite a few commentators have criticized what they call Aristotle’s “intellectualism,” suggesting that when he makes the intellectual life superior to all other human goods he opens the door to a Raskolnikov-like immoralism. Natali threads his way very carefully through the tangle of recent arguments on the topic, and presents a persuasive resolution that preserves the primacy of the life of the mind without giving any room for justifications of amorality. In Natali’s discussion, Aristotle’s analysis of wisdom comes into focus for us today as an attractive and well-argued ideal, to be kept in mind when we are deciding how to live. Natali has a keen understanding of both the continental and the analytic tendencies in interpreting Aristotle, and is able to show the positive and negative contributions of both styles of philosophy to this task. Appearing in English for the first time, this is the definitive scholarly treatment on the role of practical reasoning in ethics.

Betty A. Reardon's groundbreaking work, originally authored in 1988, provides one of the first and clearest articulations of the field of peace education in theory and practice. Through reflection on her own experiences, Reardon assesses the state of peace education and offers a new comprehensive approach. She addresses the need to help educators and citizens alike understand what peace education is, why it is needed, and how it is and should be pursued. She investigates the root causes of the violent conditions facing society so that we can better understand how education can be used to interrupt the cycles of violence and create the conditions for sustainable peace and justice. Comprehensive peace education, for the author, takes place at every level, and in every subject area, of both formal and non-formal education. In this special 2021 Edition, Reardon provides a new, reflective introduction on the emerging needs and challenges to the field for the 21st century. Formal and non-formal educators, theorists, students and activists will find practical and transformative wisdom immediately applicable to diverse conditions and contexts in Comprehensive Peace Education. Betty A. Reardon is acknowledged around the world as one of the founders of the field of peace education. She has been extensively involved in the international peace education movement and has been published widely in the field. She is a co-founder of both the International Institute on Peace Education and the Global Campaign for Peace Education.
