Retracer les événements qui ont abouti à l'Indépendance tunisienne, tel est l'objet de ce livre. S'il est vrai que la personnalité tunisienne s'est dégagée peu à peu à travers des siècles chargés d'Histoire, c'est à l'époque moderne, à l'aube du XXe siècle qu'est apparu le nationalisme tunisien. Il s'est développé au sein d'un Protectorat, qui s'était transformé depuis 1881 en un régime d'implantation et d'administration directe. La IVe République n'a pas su résoudre les problèmes posés par cette double évolution qui devait donner lieu, à partir des années 1950, à des conflits de plus en plus aigus. Tour à tour acteur et spectateur attentif, bénéficiant de l'expérience acquise au cours d'un long séjour en Afrique du Nord, l'auteur décrit et analyse, avec un grand souci d'objectivité, les faits, les étapes, les tergiversations multiples qui ont marqué l'acheminement de la Tunisie vers l'Indépendance. Il nous montre toute la part qui revient à Habib Bourguiba et à une dialectique très caractéristique du tempérament tunisien dans la lutte poursuivie avec persévérance par le mouvement nationaliste. Parallèlement, il met en lumière l'incidence des variations de la politique intérieure française sur les positions, les indécisions des gouvernements français successifs. Seule l'initiative hardie de Pierre Mendès France a permis de mettre fin, en 1954, à une période de troubles et de confusion. L'autonomie intérieure a fait place, en 1956, à l'Indépendance dans l'accord des deux gouvernements, en Tunisie comme au Maroc.
