Par ce projet de maîtrise, nous tentions de mieux comprendre les changements relatifs à la santé survenant à la suite de l’expérience d’une démarche d’alphabétisation, à partir des perspectives d’apprenants ayant fréquenté l’un ou l’autre de deux groupes populaires en alphabétisation de Québec. Nous cherchions non seulement à identifier les changements sur le plan de la santé des apprenants, mais également à documenter les mécanismes expliquant ces changements, dans la perspective de dégager des éléments des démarches d’alphabétisation contribuant à améliorer la santé. Un devis qualitatif a été employé, plus précisément une approche narrative. Onze entrevues individuelles semi-dirigées, ainsi que deux entrevues de groupe, ont été réalisées auprès d’apprenants et ex-apprenants. L’analyse des données a révélé un large éventail d’effets de l’alphabétisation populaire en lien avec santé. Les apprenants développent diverses compétences leur conférant un plus grand pouvoir d’agir sur leur santé. Cela se traduit par certains changements sur le plan de leurs comportements de santé, mais aussi par des actions plus collectives s’inscrivant en promotion de la santé. Nos résultats révèlent également que les apprenants s’épanouissent à travers leurs démarches d’alphabétisation et développent un plus grand sentiment de bien-être. L’alphabétisation leur permet de se réaliser, de se construire un réseau social et d’améliorer leur image d’eux-mêmes. Des éléments de la culture organisationnelle des groupes populaires ressortent comme contribuant à améliorer la santé des apprenants, dont l’approche collective, l’absence de jugement et le respect, le pouvoir et l’espace de parole dont ils disposent, ainsi que les opportunités qui leur sont offertes de se mettre en action et de vivre des succès. Enfin, les intervenantes des groupes paraissent jouer un rôle clé dans l’amélioration de la santé des apprenants, parce qu’elles incarnent la culture de l’alphabétisation populaire et qu’elles leur offrent leur écoute et un soutien indéfectible adapté à leurs besoins.

The Literacy and Health Project was set up to determine how reading and health problems were connected. A research phase documented the relationship between literacy and health. Information was collected from community organizations, literature review, three case studies in Ontario, and key informant interviews. The consultation process involved regional workshops across Ontario, a 2-day provincial workshop, and a strategy meeting. Findings demonstrated that virtually all health-related aspects of people with limited literacy skills were worse than for others. Illiteracy had both indirect and direct effects on health. The major impact of illiteracy on health status occurred indirectly. Illiteracy led to poor life-style practices, stress, and unhealthy living and working conditions; it also resulted in lack of access to health information and in inappropriate use of medical and health services. Three crucial areas of action were identified: a commitment to achieve literacy and health for all, a commitment to make environments healthy and safe, and a commitment to ensure equitable access to vital information. Recommendations dealt with issues of equitable access to health-related information. They involved the partnership of government, organizations, and a coordinating body. The studies contained in this volume present a sampling of policy and legislation relating to adult learning in various parts of the world. They were produced in the context of a more complete survey, under the auspices of the UNESCO Institute for Education (VIE) in cooperation with the University of Florence, which sought to identify tendencies in this field over the past few years. The international research project, under which these national studies were made, was developed under the direction of Paul Belanger, Director of UIE, and Paolo Federighi, Professor at the University of Florence. An international publication by the two project directors, due to appear at the beginning of 1997, will report on the findings of the project, which involves 26 countries. The contributions presented here reflect a broad geographical spectrum as well as a wide range of policy models. From an analysis of these studies, it is apparent that this is a field in which there has been much innovation and which encompasses markedly varying approaches in response to different national conditions.
