Tra gli antropologi solo di recente si è affermato il principio secondo cui ciò che vediamo è essenzialmente ciò che noi vogliamo vedere. Qualcuno ha poi radicalizzato la critica al carattere oggettivistico della disciplina, sostenendo che ciò che vediamo è ciò che noi vogliamo vedere di ciò che altri hanno reso evidente di ciò che essi stessi hanno voluto vedere. Un giro in apparenza lungo e vertiginoso che tocca questioni fondamentali all'incrocio tra teoria della visione, cultura dell'occhio e riflessività della conoscenza ma necessario per rifondare il paradigma scientifico delle discipline etno-antropologiche. Adesso sappiamo che un'antropologia scientifica, per dichiararsi tale, deve essere consapevole del carattere secondario e stratificato delle forme culturali e sociali che studia. Di questa consapevolezza il saggio di Francesco Faeta è oggi l'espressione più avanzata. Il campo di interazione sociale che convenzionalmente chiamiamo «osservazione» qui viene esplorato nei suoi aspetti peculiari, fondanti. Ne fanno parte la percezione e la traduzione culturale del percepito, ma vi giocano un ruolo primario anche la memoria e la rappresentazione. Mentre si osserva infatti si ricorda, mentre si ricorda si rappresenta, mentre si rappresenta si osserva. Il meccanismo è operante sia nella realtà empirica, oggetto della ricerca etnografica sul terreno, sia nella scienza sociale che ne ricostruisce le dinamiche. La continua duplicazione dei piani è un ulteriore elemento di attrattiva per chi intenda lasciarsi alle spalle la presunta immediatezza delle costruzioni di senso. Faeta lo guida nellavventura dello sguardo, dove il candore cede il passo alla strategia e nulla possiede linconfutabilità del dato. Un modo per vedere con occhi nuovi è il caso di dirlo perfino la realtà domestica del nostro Mezzogiorno, in particolare nei suoi aspetti cerimoniali e rituali, cui Faeta dedica pagine memorabili.

Carnival has been described as one of the foundational elements of European culture, bearing an emblematic and iconic status as the festive phenomenon par excellence. Its origins are partly obscure, but its stratified and complex history, rich symbolic diversity, and sundry social configurations make it an exceptional object of cultural analysis. The product of more than 12 years of research, this book is the first comparative historical anthropology of popular European Carnival in the English language, with a focus on its symbolic, religious, and political dimensions and transformations throughout the centuries. Can the way a word is used give legitimacy to a political movement? Feminism, Violence, and Representation in Modern Italy traces the use of the word "femminicidio" (or "femicide") as a tool to mobilize Italian feminists, particularly the Union of Women in Italy (UDI). Based on nearly two years of fieldwork among feminist activists, Giovanna Parmigiani takes a broad look at the many ways in which violence inflects the lives of women in Italy. From unchallenged gendered grammar rules to the representation of women as victims, Parmigiani examines the devaluing of women’s contribution to their communities through the words and experiences of the women she interviews. She describes the first uses of the word "femminicidio" as a political term used by and within feminist circles and traces its spread to ultimate legitimization and national relevance. The word redefined women as a political subject by building an imagined community of potentially violated women. In doing so, it challenged Italians to consider the status of women in Italian society, and to make this status a matter of public debate. It also problematized the connection between women and tropes of women as objects of suffering and victimhood. Parmigiani considers this exchange within the context of Italian Catholic heritage, a precarious economy, and long-held notions of honor and shame. Parmigiani provides a careful and searing consideration of the ways in which representations of violence and the politics of this representation are shaping the future of women in Italy and beyond.

Food activism is core to the contemporary study of food - there are numerous foodscapes which exist within the umbrella definition of food activism from farmer's markets, organic food movements to Fair Trade. This highly original book focuses on one key emerging foodscape dominating the Italian alternative food network (AFN) scene: GAS (gruppi di acquisto solidale or solidarity-based purchase groups) and explores the innovative social dynamics underlying these networks and the reasons behind their success. Based on a detailed 'insider' ethnography, this study interprets the principles behind these movements and key themes such as collective buying, relationships with local producers and consumers, financial management, to the everyday political and practical negotiation involving GAS groups.
