Le rievocazioni storiche negli ultimi decenni hanno riscosso un successo crescente in Italia come in altri paesi d’Europa e del mondo. Le radici affondano nell’antica tradizione delle feste storiche urbane, incentrate su competizioni legate alla suddivisione del territorio in contrade (il modello più noto è il Palio di Siena), ma a partire dalla fine del Novecento si è innestato un elemento di novità: il modello americano e nordeuropeo dell’historical reenactment o del «passato vivente», imperniato sulla messa in scena di battaglie e altri eventi storici, realizzata con il massimo grado di accuratezza sia nella ricostruzione sia nell’immedesimazione da parte degli attori. Frutto di una ricerca multidisciplinare (antropologica, storica, geografica), il volume affronta vari aspetti di questo fenomeno e delle interazioni che si creano con le feste più tradizionali. Dal Palio di Siena al calcio storico fiorentino, dal carnevale medievale di San Casciano fino alle rievocazioni della seconda guerra mondiale, in queste manifestazioni si colgono gli aspetti cruciali dei reenactment studies: la rappresentazione della memoria storica, la costruzione delle identità locali nel mondo globalizzato, i processi di patrimonializzazione della cultura intangibile, il cosplaying e i giochi di ruolo, l’influenza dello sguardo turistico nella riconfigurazione degli spazi urbani. Il contesto toscano, da questo punto di vista, emerge come particolarmente significativo: basti pensare che quasi ogni comune ha una propria rievocazione, non solo di eventi medievali e rinascimentali ma anche moderni e contemporanei. Collegando il caso della Toscana ai dibattiti internazionali sull’argomento, in queste pagine si delinea una nuova proposta conoscitiva rivolta tanto agli studiosi di scienze umane e sociali quanto agli appassionati di rievocazioni e ai cultori di public history.

Memorylands is an original and fascinating investigation of the nature of heritage, memory and understandings of the past in Europe today. It looks at how Europe has become a ’memoryland’ – littered with material reminders of the past, such as museums, heritage sites and memorials; and at how this ‘memory phenomenon’ is related to the changing nature of identities – especially European, national and cosmopolitan. In doing so, it provides new insights into how memory and the past are being performed and reconfigured in Europe – and with what effects. Enacting History is a collection of new essays exploring the world of historical performances. The volume focuses on performances outside the traditional sphere of theatre, among them living history museums, battle reenactments, pageants, renaissance festivals, and adventure-tourism destinations. This volume argues that the recent surge in such performances have raised significant questions about the need for, interest in, and value of such nontraditional theater. Many of these performances claim a greater or lesser degree of historical "accuracy" or "authenticity," and the authors tease out the representational and historiographic issues related to these arguments. How, for instance, are issues of race, ethnicity, and gender dealt with at museums that purport to be accurate windows into the past? How are politics and labor issues handled in local- or state-funded institutions that rely on volunteer performers? Biomedicine is often thought to provide a scientific account of the human body and of illness. In this view, non-Western and folk medical systems are regarded as systems of 'belief' and subtly discounted. This is an impoverished perspective for understanding illness and healing across cultures, one that neglects many facets of Western medical practice and obscures its kinship with healing in other traditions. Drawing on his research in several American and Middle Eastern medical settings, in this 1993 book Professor Good develops a critical, anthropological account of medical knowledge and practice. He shows how physicians and healers enter and inhabit distinctive worlds of meaning and experience. He explores how stories or illness narratives are joined with bodily experience in shaping and responding to human suffering and argues that moral and aesthetic considerations are present in routine medical practice as in other forms of healing.
