La critique littéraire africaine de ces cernières années est unanime sur le fait que la thématique du roman africain francophone est essentiellement centrée sur la question des nouveaux pouvoirs politiques nés des indépendances africaines. Cohabiter l’espace postcolonial s’interroge essentiellement sur les enjeux écologiques dans le roman africain en français. Cet ouvrage met en lumière les stratégies complexes et diverses par lesquelles les questions environnementales s’inscrivent dans la fiction. Recourant à l’écocritique, aux théories postcoloniales et posthumanistes pour analyser un corpus romanesque large et varié, il mène le lecteur, à travers la diversité des problématiques abordés, à la découverte des nuances contextuelles du rapport entre l’humain et le non-humain. De la précarité du monde rural à la survie en milieu urbain et autres écosystèmes hostiles, en passant par l’altérité animale, l’importance du végétal, le racisme environnemental et la justice environnementale, ce livre montre comment, à l’échelle de la localité, les questions écologiques se déclinent en réels défis socioculturels et politiques. Cohabiter l’espace postcolonial focuses on the importance of ecological issues in African fiction. The book highlights the complex and diverse strategies deployed in French speaking Africa to incorporate environmental subjects in literary productions. Using ecocriticism, postcolonial and posthumanist theories to analyse a wide variety of novels, it brings to the fore, through the diversity of the issues it addresses, some contextual inflections of the relationship between the human and the non-human. From its discussion of animal otherness, cultural significance of plants, environmental racism, environmental justice, the fragility of the rural world and the survival in urban environments, the book demonstrates how ecological issues translate into socio-cultural and political challenges for local communities in Africa.

The figure of the dictator looms large in representations of postcolonial Africa. Since the late 1970s, writers, film-makers and theorists have sought to represent the realities of dictatorship without endorsing the colonialist cliches portraying Africans as incapable of self-government. Against the heavily-politicized responses provoked by this dilemma, Bishop argues for a form of criticism that places the complexity of the reader's or spectator's experiences at the heart of its investigations. Ranging across literature, film and political theory, this study calls for a reengagement with notions - often seen as unwelcome diversions from political questions - such as referentiality, genre and aesthetics. But rather than pit 'political' approaches against formal and aesthetic procedures, the author presents new insights into the interplay of the political and the aesthetic. Cecile Bishop is a Junior Research Fellow in French at Somerville College, Oxford.

My dissertation entitled ''De l'indigène au banlieuesard'' concerns itself with the representation and status of the African "postcolonial other" since the encounter between Africa and France till today. Building on the reading of six novels that are representative of both Sub-Saharan Africa and North Africa, and that cover three distinct moments of the France-Africa encounter, I follow the ways in which the colonial subject is treated, perceived, handled and ultimately represented by French colonial and postcolonial power. I therefore shed light on the ways in which the dehumanization of postcolonial subjects has a longstanding history, beginning with colonial laws such as the "Code de l'Indigénat" and continuing with the treatment of immigrants to France, as well as the paradoxical status of their heirs nowadays in the French banlieues, areas that have been very often associated with Africa in the recent French official discourse around the 2005 urban riots. Looking at the invention of the savage and the barbarian in colonial times, I argue that the immigrant of the mid-20th century inherits the same features albeit in a different space and context. The last part of my dissertation puts forward the idea that the banlieues in France are not that different than a colonial theater. Ultimately, my dissertation attempts to underline the relation between politics and aesthetics in novels from Africa and its diaspora to build a bridge between geo-aesthetics and geopolitics.
