Cet essai La guerre d’Algérie dans le roman français – s’appuie, dans son contenu et sa démarche, sur une centaine d’ouvrages de genres très variés : fiction, récit, carnets de voyage, témoignage romancé, polar. Il offre ainsi un large éventail de pistes de lectures et de réflexions sur la littérature algérienne des Français qui, depuis ses fondateurs à la nouvelle génération des écrivains nés après 1962, reste essentiellement une littérature ancrée au passé colonial, avec ses faits d’histoire collective et ses pathos. Divisé en deux tomes distincts mais complémentaires et solidaires du point de vue de la réalité historique et des structures narratives des romans étudiés, l'essai offre aux lecteurs une diversité de regards emphatiques, croisés, divergents, antagoniques parfois, sur le passé colonial de la France en Algérie, la période de la conquête, peu exploitée, et la guerre proprement dite (1954-1962). Pour ce premier tome, Esthétique du bourreau, l’auteur développe une approche comparative de romans sur différentes périodes de publication ayant pour principal protagoniste, le militaire de la guerre d'Algérie, le soldat appelé du contingent trahi par les mensonges d’Etat de son pays et la figure du parachutiste que peignent avec moult prouesses stylistiques ses fictionneurs, charriant sur son sillage les récits de Verdun, l'héroïsme des maquis du Vercors durant la seconde guerre mondiale, l’inénarrable des camps nazis, l'humiliante défaite de Diên Biên Phu. Face à ces monceaux de guerres, ici de bravoure, là de honte, ce paradoxal militaire littéraire de Laurent Mauvignier, Jérôme Ferrari, Alexis Jenni, Mathieu Belezi, en est la voix primesautière, révulsive et corrosive qui vomit ses entrailles, exorcise ses traumatismes générés par une guerre putride qui, si elle ne l'a pas transformé en bourreau expert de la gégène, a fait de lui un spectateur désarmé et coupable d’avoir tu l'abject généré par son armée sur les populations indigènes.
