In this fresh look at Chaucer's relation to English and French romances of the late Middle Ages, Crane shows that Chaucer's depictions of masculinity and femininity constitute an extensive and sympathetic response to the genre. For Chaucer, she proposes, gender is the defining concern of romance. As the foundational narratives of courtship, romances participate in the late medieval elaboration of new meanings around heterosexual identity. Crane draws on feminist and genre theory to argue that Chaucer's profound interest in the cultural construction of masculinity and femininity arises in large part from his experience of romance. In depicting the maturation of young women and men, romances stage an ideology of identity that is based in gender difference. Less obviously gendered concerns of romance--social hierarchy, magic, and adventure--are also involved in expressing femininity and masculinity. The genders prove to be not simply binary opposites but overlapping and shifting coreferents. Precarious social standing can carry a feminine taint; women's adventures recall but also contradict those of men. This lively study reveals that Chaucer's redeployments of romance are particularly sensitive to the crucial place gender holds in the genre. Originally published in 1994. This 1998 study serves as a contribution to both reception history, examining the medieval response to Chrétien's poetry, and genre history, suveying the evolution of Arthurian verse romance in French. It describes the evolutionary changes taking place between Chrétien's Eric et Enide and Froissart's Meliador, the first and last examples of the genre, and is unique in placing Chrétien's work, not as the unequalled masterpieces of the whole of Arthurian literature, but as the starting point for the history of the genre, which can subsequently be traced over a period of two centuries in the French-speaking world. El romancero está en la encrucijada de la oralidad tradicional y de la poesía culta, marcadamente cortés en los cancioneros del siglo xv y de la primera mitad del xvi. Es por ello que, para descubrir el romancero antiguo, son tan importantes los testimonios manuscritos con textos romanceriles hoy dispersos en bibliotecas europeas y americanas, por primera vez reunidos en esta edición crítica. Este corpus de romances, incluyendo los contrafacta y las glosas, no solo se editan críticamente, sino que cuentan con una introducción, notas e índices que facilitan la navegación por el romancero cortés manuscrito. Virginie Dumanoir es doctora en Filología Románica por la Université de Provence y profesora titular de la Universidad Rennes 2 (Francia). Fue alumna de la École Normale Supérieure de París y miembro de la Casa de Velázquez de Madrid. Sus investigaciones se centran en el romancero peninsular antiguo: estudia los temas, la composición, reescritura, transcripción y transmisión del romancero cortés manuscrito desde principios del siglo xv hasta mediados del siglo xvi.
