A partire dalla "scoperta" della Terrasanta, con i viaggi di pellegrini e crociati alla volta dell'Oriente, il cristianesimo medievale comincia a fare i conti con le numerose reliquie collegate a Gesù portate in Occidente alla fine di molti "itinerari": reliquie della lancia, della spugna, del flagello, della veste, della colonna, dei chiodi e della croce. Ovverosia (e in gran parte), reliquie della Passione, strumenti e oggetti degli ultimi giorni della vita terrena del Cristo, che vengono sminuzzati, polverizzati, frantumati, divisi e distribuiti, per arricchire le collezioni di papi, re e imperatori, chiese e monasteri. Ma della vita di Gesù, se si tralasciano le reliquie più "eccentriche" e quelle del sangue della crocifissione, rimane qualcosa anche dei primi giorni, frammenti corporali non coinvolti nella risurrezione. Una lunga tradizione, variamente elaborata nel corso di diversi secoli, ha, in particolare, indicato nell'ombelico di Gesù e nel suo prepuzio, conservato da Maria dopo la rescissione dovuta alla circoncisione, le uniche reliquie dell'infanzia rimaste sulla terra. Deriso, dissacrato, reso oggetto di scherno da riformatori e illuministi in quanto esemplare evidente di una superstizione religiosa risultato inevitabile dell'ignoranza, il prepuzio di Gesù, nonostante i suoi "multipli" diffusi per l'Italia e l'Europa, è stato considerato, nel tempo, la prova più evidente dell'umanità del Salvatore. Analizzarne le vicende significa fare appello a un discorso che coinvolge l'antropologia e la storia, la teologia e la cristologia.
