Adaptation, arabisation, marocanisation ou simple traduction, toutes ces formes d'emprunt au texte étranger furent massivement pratiquées par les dramaturges marocains désireux de se confronter à cet art nouveau qu'est le théâtre moderne. Ce travail essaie de retracer une généalogie de la prtaique de l'emprunt au texte étranger au Maroc en analysant dans les détails les processus intertextuels et interculturels qur recèlent les pièces adaptées les plus marquantes de l'histoire de l'art dramatique marocain. Notre analyse porte sur cinq périodes qui constituent des moments cruciaux dans l'évolution de cette pratique intellectuelle : la période des "premiers contacts avec le texte étranger", celle de "l'implantation et de l'adaptation au Maroc", celle de "la transplantation", celle de "l'adaptation à l'épreuve de l'expérimentation" et enfin celle de "la nouvelle dramaturgie". La pratique de l'adaptation au Maroc reste fortement liée à des hommes de théâtre qui soit se sont illustrés dans une pratique particulière de la traduction ou de l'adaptation soit ont inventé de nouvelles formes d'emprunt au texte occidental. Une partie importante de notre travail a donc aussi été consacré à quelques-uns de ces "faiseurs de théâtre", tels Mehdi Al-Mnai, André Voisin, Ate Wakil, Ahmed Tayeb Al-Alj, Tayeb Saddiki et Youssef Rayhani.
