Quels métiers se cachent derrière les décors que constituent les galeries de musées, les salles d'archives ou les façades des monuments, plus familières au public que les magasins, réserves, salles de tri ou de restauration où se fabrique le patrimoine ? Ces activités professionnelles sont, de fait, une part tenue dans l’ombre d’un spectacle patrimonial qui se mesure habituellement en milliers voire en dizaine de milliers de visiteurs, et en dizaine voire en centaines de millions d’euros de budget. Part de l’ombre mais aussi parfois métiers de l’ombre : les acteurs qui retiennent ici l’attention des chercheurs – gardiens, médiateurs, amateurs en voie de professionnalisation – ne sont pas toujours ceux que les médias mettent volontiers au premier plan. Lorsqu’elles deviennent terrain de l’ethnologue, ces professions souvent sollicitées pour porter un discours assertif sur le patrimoine apparaissent en proie au doute, loin de leurs certitudes scientifiques : conservateurs en mal d’objets, restaurateurs incertains face aux défis du temps, chercheurs en proie à des injonctions contraires… Aux ethnographies attentives rassemblées dans ce volume, véritable auscultation d’un monde professionnel, il convenait d’offrir une large mise en perspective. Métiers anciens ou nouveaux, tous s’inscrivent en effet dans le paradigme d’un tournant qui a bouleversé jusqu’au sens du mot « patrimoine ». Dès lors, celui-ci désigne moins un instrument de conservation de l’histoire nationale qu’une forme, de plus en plus individuelle, d’expérience du passé, repoussant indéfiniment les limites du potentiel patrimonial, et délaissant les assurances de l’expertise scientifique au profit des incertitudes de la démocratie culturelle.

The Material Subject emphasises how bodily and material cultures combine to make and transform subjects dynamically. The book is based on the French Matière à Penser (MaP) school of thought, which draws upon the ideas of Mauss, Schilder, Foucault and Bourdieu, among others, to enhance the anthropological study of embodiment, practices, techniques, materiality and power. Through theoretical sophistication and empirical field research, case studies from Europe, Africa and Asia bring MaP’s ideas into dialogue with other strands of material culture studies in the English-speaking world. These studies mediate different scales of engagement through a sensori-motor, affective and cognitive focus on practices of making and doing. Examples range from the precarity of professional divers in French public works to the gendered subjectivity of female carpet weavers in Morocco, from the ways Swiss watchmakers transmit craft knowledge to how Hindu devotees in India make efficacious use of altars, and from the enskilment of Paiwan indigenous people in Taiwan to the prestige of women’s wild silk wrappers in Burkina Faso. The chapters are organised according to domains of practice, defined as 'matter of' work and technology, heritage, politics, religion and knowledge. Scholars and students with an interest in material culture will gain valuable access to global research, rooted in a specific intellectual tradition.

After experiencing the SARS outbreak in 2003, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan all invested in various techniques to mitigate future pandemics involving myriad cross-species interactions between humans and birds. In some locations microbiologists allied with veterinarians and birdwatchers to follow the mutations of flu viruses in birds and humans and create preparedness strategies, while in others, public health officials worked toward preventing pandemics by killing thousands of birds. In Avian Reservoirs Frédéric Keck offers a comparative analysis of these responses, tracing how the anticipation of bird flu pandemics has changed relations between birds and humans in China. Drawing on anthropological theory and ethnographic fieldwork, Keck demonstrates that varied strategies dealing with the threat of pandemics—stockpiling vaccines and samples in Taiwan, simulating pandemics in Singapore, and monitoring viruses and disease vectors in Hong Kong—reflect local geopolitical relations to mainland China. In outlining how interactions among pathogens, birds, and humans shape the way people imagine future pandemics, Keck illuminates how interspecies relations are crucial for protecting against such threats.

A la suite du débat qui opposa l’anthropo-linguiste Dell Hymes au linguiste Noam Chomsky au milieu des années 1960, la notion de performance a connu un important développement, d’abord dans le domaine de la littérature orale (Richard Bauman), puis dans celui de l’étude du rituel, qui lancera le courant des Performance Studies, dans la continuité des travaux de l’anthropologue Victor Turner et de l’homme de théâtre Richard Schechner. L’intérêt porté à la performance a centré l’attention sur l’acteur et a permis le développement des notions d’expérience et d’agentivité (agency). Dans le même temps, la notion de compétence, telle qu’elle avait été redéfinie par Dell Hymes, a été négligée au profit de celles d’action et d’intentionnalité. Ces notions prennent effectivement mieux en compte la dimension conjuguée du sens, de la connaissance et du pouvoir. Ont-elles pour autant rendue caduque la notion de compétence ? Celle-ci ne peut-elle pas, en tenant compte du contexte théorique actuel, être pensée à nouveau dans sa complémentarité avec celle de performance ? Cet ouvrage expose les résultats de deux journées d’études interdisciplinaires organisées par le Canthel (Centre d’anthropologie culturelle) dans le cadre des Projets collaboratifs de l’université Paris Descartes, où se sont rencontrés spécialistes de l’Antiquité, anthropologues, ethnolinguistes, ethnomusicologues, psycholinguistes et spécialistes de la littérature orale. Cécile Leguy est professeur d’anthropologie linguistique à l’Université Sorbonne nouvelle-Paris 3 (DILTEC). Ses recherches de terrain sont en grande partie consacrées aux modalités de la communication en Afrique de l’Ouest. Elle a notamment publié Le Proverbe chez les Bwa du Mali (Karthala, 2001). Sandra Bornand, chargée de recherche au CNRS en ethnolinguistique (Langage, langues et cultures d’Afrique noire – LLACAN, Inalco, CNRS, PRES Sorbonne-Paris Cité), mène ses recherches de terrain au Niger sur la littérature orale songhay-zarma. Elle a notamment publié Le Discours du griot généalogiste chez les Zarma du Niger (Karthala, 2005). C. Leguy et S. Bornand ont récemment co-publié Anthropologie des pratiques langagières (Armand Colin, collection U, 2013).

Des dizaines de millions de Kurdes vivent en Turquie, en Iran, en Syrie et en Irak et, depuis un siècle, se mobilisent régulièrement pour obtenir des droits culturels, une autonomie régionale, voire l’indépendance. Si la perspective d’un État kurde n’a jamais été aussi lointaine, la multiplication des guerres civiles et des interventions extérieures depuis les années 1990 (interventions américaines en Irak et en Syrie, guérilla du PKK) a eu pour résultat que, pour la première fois, des populations kurdes sont gouvernées par des mouvements kurdes, parfois depuis plus d’une génération. À rebours d’une conception romantique et loin des clichés sur les tribus kurdes, les auteurs montrent la centralité des partis politiques dans l’organisation de ces ordres sociaux alternatifs du nord Irak, de la Syrie et de la Turquie. À partir de données originales tirées de terrains longs en Turquie, en Irak et en Syrie, ils analysent ces «gouvernements partisans» dans toute leur complexité. En particulier, la matrice idéologique, la discipline interne et l’ancrage militant conditionnent les pratiques de gouvernement des partis, par exemple leur rapport aux institutions publiques ou la mise en place de programmes scolaires. Par ailleurs, les mouvements kurdes se trouvent confrontés à la gestion de minorités non kurdes, notamment en Irak et en Syrie, provoquant une adaptation du programme politique ou la mise en place de régimes discriminatoires.
