EXTRAIT Au sein du studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki est donc beaucoup plus libre de ses projets et de ses choix, se permettant de se consacrer aux longs-métrages d’animation originaux. Le premier à paraître est Le Château dans le ciel en août 1986, qui attire près de huit cent mille spectateurs, pour lequel il aura effectué des repérages en Angleterre et au Pays de Galles. Miyazaki produit l’année suivante, via sa société Nibariki4 basée dans l’arrondissement de Suginami à Tokyo, le documentaire Yanagawa Horiwari Monogatari réalisé par son confrère Isao Takahata. Le film en prises de vues réelles avec quelques courtes séquences animées, qui dure près de trois heures, s’attarde sur l’histoire du canal de la ville de Tokyo située sur l’île méridionale de Kyushu. En avril 1988, Mon voisin Totoro sort au cinéma en séance commune avec Le Tombeau des lucioles de Takahata. Bien que refusé au départ par les producteurs, le succès (huit cent mille spectateurs), et surtout l’impact de Totoro auprès du public, dépassera toutes les attentes.
