Questo libro è il racconto inedito della sua vita, dall’infanzia nella farmacia del padre a Mantova fino al salotto milanese della maturità dove si riunivano i più importanti nomi della cultura dell’epoca, passando attraverso il periodo universitario e i sogni romantici di una ragazza animata sempre da un principio categorico: “Io devo”. Petronilla parla con voce fresca alle lettrici di oggi, come ha parlato, attraverso le sue rubriche, a quelle di ieri, rivelandosi un’incredibile, attualissima donna d’altri tempi.

The book explores, through a reflection on food, the complexity of the concept of well-being. It starts from the consideration that food is a fundamental element for human well-being, and for well-being of the planet as a whole. Giuliana Orlandi nasce a Roma, nel 1949. Dopo gli studi classici, consegue la laurea in Medicina presso l’Università “La Sapienza”, nel 1974, specializzandosi in pediatria tre anni dopo. Nel 1985 consegue il diploma di psicoterapeuta; si dedica alle filosofie orientali e alla meditazione. Nel 1986 vince un premio di poesia con la sua raccolta antologica Uno Specchio per Elettra, seguita poi da una seconda raccolta, I Territori di Eliàs. Alias Petronilla è il suo primo romanzo.

Gli italiani nel Novecento hanno dovuto fare i conti con termini quali il razionamento, l'annona, i surrogati, l'autarchia, la fame da trincea, la gavetta e la marmitta. Tutte parole che mascheravano la fame di guerra e, come accadde dopo le sanzioni imposte dalla Società delle Nazioni nel 1935, la restrizione. Il fascismo coniò slogan come "Chi mangia troppo deruba la Patria" e inaugurò gli orti di guerra sostituendo il té con il carcadè, il Caffè con il Caffesol, una sorta di miscela marroncina che nulla manteneva dell'aroma proprio del caffè, e la pasta, dopo una forte propaganda, con il riso, prodotto dalle risaie italiane. Fin dal 1914 furono le massaie chiamate in prima fila a evitare sprechi e inventare la cucina del riuso e del riciclo. Nulla si doveva buttare. Tutto era buono per altri manicaretti. Si moltiplicarono così fino al boom economico degli anni '50 libri di ricette, suggerimenti e ordini per sfamare un popolo chiamato a combattere, oltre che il nemico, la fame continua. Sarà l'industrializzazione e il consumismo a riempire la pancia degli italiani che una volta sfamati dimenticheranno l'utile e, tutto sommato, "piacevole" cucina del poco e del senza.

The Oratorio in the classical Era is the third volume of Howard Smither's monumental History of the Oratorio, continuing his synthesis and critical appraisal of the oratorio. His comprehensive study surpasses in scope and treatment all previous works on the subject. A fourth and final volume, on the oratorio in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, is forthcoming. In this volume Smither discusses the Italian oratorio from the 1720s to the early nineteenth century and oratorios from other parts of Europe from the 1750s to the nineteenth century. Drawing on works that represent various types, languages, and geographical areas, Smither treats the general characteristics of oratorio libretto and music and analyzes twenty-two oratorios from Italy, England, Germany, France, and Russia. He synthesizes the results of specialized studies and contributes new material based on firsthand study of eighteenth-century music manuscripts and printed librettos. Emphasizing the large number of social contexts within which oratorios were heard, Smither discussed examples in Italy such as the Congregation of the Oratory, lay contrafraternities, and educational institutions. He examines oratorio performances in German courts, London theaters and English provincial festivals, and the Parisian Concert spirituel. Though the volume concentrates primarily on eighteenth-century oratorio from the early to the late Classical styles, Smither includes such transitional works as the oratorios of Jean-Francios le Seur in Paris and Stepan Anikievich Degtiarev in Moscow. A History of the Oratorio is the first full-length history of the genre since Arnold Schering's 1911 study. In addition to synthesizing current thought about the oratorio, this volume contributes new information on relationships between oratorio librettos and contemporary literary and religious thought, and on the musical differences among oratorios from different geographical-cultural regions.
