La seconde partie du Voyage du Pèlerin, de John Bunyan, n'atteint pas à l'originalité puissante de la première, parce qu'elle la répète trop. Elle contient cependant suffisamment d'images précieuses des réalités spirituelles pour mériter de ne pas rester complètement inconnue du public français. Sans s'en rendre compte le lecteur s'attachera plus qu'il ne pense à Christiana et à sa petite troupe ; c'est avec tristesse et envie qu'il les regardera, dans le dernier chapitre, traverser le fleuve, dont l'autre rive touche à l'éternité. Pour exemple, le prédicateur Spurgeon aimait à y relever cette perle : « Là-dessus, les pèlerins observèrent les mouvements de la poule, et s'aperçurent qu'elle procédait de quatre manières différentes envers ses petits : 1. Elle les appelait d'abord par un gloussement ordinaire qui se répète fréquemment dans la journée ; 2. elle leur adressait un appel spécial ; mais cela n'avait lieu que par intervalles ; 3. elle procédait sur un ton particulièrement tendre tandis qu'ils étaient recueillis sous ses ailes ; 4. elle faisait entendre un cri d'alarme. Maintenant, continua l'Interprète, représentez-vous la conduite de votre Roi par celle de cette poule, et faites un rapprochement entre ses sujets et les poussins ; car l'un est l'emblème de l'autre. Dieu agit aussi envers les siens d'après une méthode qui lui est propre. Par son appel ordinaire, il ne leur donne rien ; par son appel spécial, il a toujours quelque chose à leur communiquer : il fait entendre aussi une douce voix à ceux qui se tiennent sous son aile, et il ne manque pas de donner le signal de l'alarme quand il voit venir l'ennemi. » Cette numérisation ThéoTeX reproduit la traduction de 1855.

Cette oeuvre fait suite au Voyage du Pèlerin. Il nous a semblé que cette seconde partie était, non seulement un complément de la première, comme l'indique le titre, mais qu'elle pouvait être, sous la bénédiction divine, un puissant moyen de réveiller les pécheurs, et de nourrir et fortifier la foi des enfants de Dieu. C'est dans la confiance qu'elle atteindra ce double but que nous la publions. Le récit du voyage de Christiana présenté sous la forme d'un songe, nous fait entrer dans les réalités de la vie chrétienne. Quoique appelée dans des circonstances et d'une manière différentes de celles de son prédécesseur, Christiana n'en fait pas moins les mêmes expériences, et doit suivre le chemin de l'humiliation pour arriver à la cité céleste. Ce sont les mêmes luttes, les mêmes aspirations, les mêmes espérances, la même foi, le même bonheur qui sont dépeints dans ce livre; on y retrouve le même corps de doctrines. Cependant, la vie de Christiana et de ses enfants nous présente de nouvelles phases intéressantes du christianisme pratique; elle nous fait connaître peut-être d'une manière plus intime les tendresses et les inépuisables compassions de Dieu, en même temps qu'elle nous fait descendre dans les replis les plus cachés du coeur humain.

Literary Territories introduces readers to a wide range of literature from 200-900 CE in which geography is a defining principle of literary art. From accounts of Holy Land pilgrimage, to Roman mapmaking, to the systematization of Ptolemy's scientific works, Literary Territories argues that forms of literature that were conceived and produced in very different environments and for different purposes in Late Antiquity nevertheless shared an aesthetic sensibility which treated the classical "inhabited world," the oikoumene, as a literary metaphor for the collection and organization of knowledge. This type of "cartographical thinking" stresses the world of knowledge that is encapsulated in the literary archive. The archival aesthetic coincided with an explosion of late antique travel and Christian pilgrimage which in itself suggests important unifying themes between visual and textual conceptions of space. Indeed, by the end of Late Antiquity the geographical mode appears in nearly every type of writing in multiple Christian languages (Greek, Latin, Syriac, and others). The diffusion of cartographical thinking throughout the real-world oikoumene, now the Christian Roman Empire, was a fundamental intellectual trajectory of Late Antiquity.

After the success of the first international conference on the medieval chronicle, it was decided that another would be in place. It was held in the summer of 1999, and again drew some 150 participants. There are several reasons why the chronicle is particularly suited as the topic of an international conference. In the first place there is its ubiquity: all over Europe and throughout the Middle Ages chronicles were written, both in Latin and in the vernacular, and not only in Europe but also in the countries neighbouring on it, like those of the Arabic world. Secondly, all chronicles raise such questions as by whom, for whom, or for what purpose were they written, how do they reconstruct the past, what determined the choice of verse or prose, or what kind of literary influences are discernable in them. Finally, many chronicles have been beautifully illuminated, and the relation between text and image leads to a wholly different set of questions. Like its predecessor this volume of conference papers aims to provide a representative survey of the on-going research in the field of chronicle studies, illustrated by examples from specific chronicles from a wide variety of countries, periods and cultural backgrounds. They are introduced by the opening address by David Dumville, on the question What is a chronicle?
