"More than 5 million Canadians take part in recreational angling each year, spending over 50 million days fishing on open water. Recreational anglers contribute to environmental lead deposition through the loss of lead fishing sinkers and jigs. Each year, lost or discarded fishing sinkers and jigs amounting to an estimated 500 tonnes of lead, and representing up to 14% of all nonrecoverable lead releases in Canada, are deposited in the Canadian environment. Wildlife, primarily piscivorous birds and other waterbirds, ingest fishing sinkers and jigs during feeding, when they either mistake the sinkers and jigs for food items or grit or consume lost bait fish with the line and weight still attached."--from Abstract.

"Canadians are exposed to low levels of lead via various routes including; food, drinking water, air, dust, soil, and lead-containing products. Although blood lead levels (BLLs) have declined by over 70% in Canada since 1978-1979, lead is still widely detected in the Canadian population. Several sources of potential lead exposure of the general population and the environment remain a concern and require further analyses. The purpose of this study is to research and gather background and use pattern information on lead sinkers/jigs and their non-lead alternatives. The information and analysis provided in the resultant report will assist Environment and Climate Change Canada risk managers in finalizing an effective risk management strategy for lead that includes appropriate actions that address the use of lead in this application"--Introd., p. 1, 2.

This report reviews the available information on the use, environmental fate, and toxicity of spent lead shot and lost lead fishing weights. The report begins with a summary of information on the production, import, and use of lead shot and fishing sinkers in Canada. It then discusses the fate of these products in the environment, including chemical transformation of metallic lead in the environment, lead concentrations in soils and biota, and factors affecting the environmental mobility of lead compounds. The next section assesses the toxicity of lead shot and sinkers to waterfowl and non-waterfowl species, effects of lead shot ingestion in cattle, and human health concerns about hunting with lead shot. The report ends with a discussion of options for managing the negative impacts of those products, including using alternatives to lead, restricting use of lead shot, and alternative fishing sinker products.

Many books have now been published in the broad field of environmental toxicology. However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. Wild animal stories, whether they are about the disappearance of charismatic top predators, or of grossly deformed embryos or frogs, provide powerful symbols that can and have captured the public's imagination and have resulted in increased awareness by decision makers. It is the intent of this book to present factual and balanced overviews and summaries of the science and the subsequent regulatory processes that followed to effect change (or not). We cover a variety of chemicals and topics beginning with an update of the classic California coastal DDT story of eggshell thinning and avian reproduction to more recent cases, such as the veterinarian pharmaceutical that has brought three species of Asian vultures to the brink of extinction. Researchers, regulators, educators, NGOs and the general public will find valuable insights into the processes and mechanisms involved both in environmental scientific investigation and in efforts to effect positive change.

Ecotoxicology offers an overview of current ecotoxicological problems. It includes basic ecotoxicological concepts, as well as information about chemicals and toxic substances that may cause harmful effects on the ecosystem and its living components. The book, with a total of 48 chapters, is divided into three parts. The first part includes the basic concepts of ecotoxicology, starting with an introductory chapter on ecotoxicology as a subdiscipline of ecology; assessment on ecotoxicological effects and risk; and properties and effects of toxic chemicals. These topics are further discussed throughout the book, along with nomenclature, focal topics, and the history of ecotoxicology. The two remaining parts tackle harmful properties and harmful chemicals. The second part also covers bioaccumulation, bioavailability, biodegradability, biodegradation, and biomagnification. It also provides models for ecotoxicological populations, ecosystems and landscapes, and on food-web bioaccumulation. Chemicals including benzene, copper, lead, nitrogen, phenols, pheromones, phthalates, plutonium, and uranium are covered in separate chapters in the final part. This book will be of great value to ecologists, ecotoxicologists, and environmental managers. Provides an overview of the theory and application of global ecology International focus and range of ecosystems makes Ecotoxicology an indispensable resource to scientists Based on the bestselling Encyclopedia of Ecology Full-color figures and tables support the text and aid in understanding
