BANG-BOOM-CRASH! Rock'n'Rollin' is an all-in-one drum-set method book created for the enthusiastic beginner, starting their path to stardom in the drumming world. Throughout the book, students learn each instrument, the essential patterns, and start to learn the drumming basics. Students will also have activities to work on in the book such as coloring, matching, and composing their own patterns! By the end of the book, kids will be reading drum patterns on a staff, and play a basic rock beat. Hey Teachers! The big idea for R'n'R Book 1 is for students to discover the drumset, work on arm and leg independence, and read music in a variety of ways. There are also a few opportunities for students to compose their own patterns and songs throughout the book. R'n'R is a scaffolded curriculum, so concepts will build on one another. With this being a discovery book, students should not be rushed through the book, and it is completely okay to keep students working on a certain section or pattern for a few weeks at a time until they're comfortable. To make sure they're playing with accuracy, start off each pattern around 60bpm. You can adjust the tempo from there as they learn the patterns. The book is sectioned into 6 units that take students from learning body percussion to reading drumset music on the staff. Unit 1 starts students off with Body Percussion where students practice "playing" the drums by exploring different body parts and patterns we can create with our arms and legs. Students will learn all 4 of their limbs, and compose their own patterns. In units 2-5, we introduce the instruments sequentially. For Units 2-5, there are only 16 "beats" shown on each page, but do feel free to repeat the page as much as possible or as you'd like so the student has enough practice. With Patterns 30-40, we add on more limbs so students have gain experience in playing with multiple body parts at the same time In Unit 6, students are introduced to the "Staff", modified to 3-lines, and 2-spaces. While the instruments are not placed exactly how they would be on a 5-line staff, it introduces the students the idea of how to read drum-set music on a staff. To help aid students when they are learning the patterns, you can try the following: Tap out each beat or icon and have students tell you what instrument it is. Turn it into a Body Beat: have students work out which limbs to use for the pattern. Touch and Say: students point and say each instrument so they can hear and see what instrument it is before playing it. Pull up fun songs on a music app and let students play along with the song. This could be a drumless backing track on YouTube for even more fun for the student!
