For over one hundred years, Navajos have gone to work in significant numbers on Southwestern railroads. As they took on the arduous work of laying and anchoring tracks, they turned to traditional religion to anchor their lives. Jay Youngdahl, an attorney who has represented Navajo workers in claims with their railroad employers since 1992 and who more recently earned a master's in divinity from Harvard, has used oral history and archival research to write a cultural history of Navajos' work on the railroad and the roles their religious traditions play in their lives of hard labor away from home.

You are an artist. You've mastered your art form, and you're out in the world living the artist's life. But you also want to make a difference in the world as a teaching artist. You know how to pursue excellence in your art form; how can you pursue excellence in teaching artistry? A Teaching Artist's Companion: How to Define and Develop Your Practice is a how-to reference for veteran and beginning teaching artists alike. Artist-educator Daniel Levy has been working in classrooms, homeless shelters and correctional facilities for over thirty years. With humor and hard-won insight, Levy and a variety of contributing teaching artists narrate their successes and failures while focusing on the practical mechanics of working within conditions of limited time and resources. Levy organizes teaching artist practice within a framework of View, Design, and Respond. View is everything you value and believe about teaching and learning; Design is what you plan before you go into a classroom; Respond is how you react to and support your students face to face. With the aid of checklists, worksheets, and primary sources, A Teaching Artist's Companion invites you to define your own unique view, and guides your observing, critiquing, and shaping your practice over time.

Beauty Unsuspected is a series of narratives written by Athena Stevens. Born with athetoid cerebral palsy, Stevens has a knack for getting herself into unique and often inexplicable situations, finding help in the most unexpected places, and seeing connections in seemingly random events. From being given tickets to the opera by a Big Issue seller, to digging up worms with her boat-dwelling neighbors, affectionately known as "the pirates," this book questions what it means to be human, vulnerable, and courageous within the most mundane activities of life.

Hozho--the Navajo word for "walking in beauty"--lies at the heart of these 25 stories of Native American wit and wisdom--stories in which Deer Spirit, Old Coyote, Sacred Mountains, crystal caves, and basketball magic reign. Survival and transcendence are central themes among Native writings, but humor and a sense of play resonate throughout these tales as well. Featuring well-known and up-and-coming Native American writers, this unique anthology captures the enduring traditions of indigenous peoples. Hozho: Walking in Beauty reveals the rich tapestry of Indian life in contemporary America. It examines the experience not only of what it means to be Indian, straddling both Western and Native worlds, but also what it means to be an American, a hybrid of people living in a land of diverse cultures.
