Die Arbeit liefert eine Gesamtinterpretation des geschichtsphilosophischen Klassikers von Giovanni Battista Vico "Prinzipien einer neuen Wissenschaft über die gemeinsame Natur der Völker" (1744). Neben einer Interpretation des verum-factum-Prinzips als erkenntnistheoretische Grundlage des Werks und einer Rekonstruktion seines Geschichtsbildes schließt die Dissertation einen Vorschlag zur ideengeschichtlichen Einordnung Vicos sowie eine Diskussion der Aktualität seiner Geschichtsphilosophie ein. Es wird gezeigt, dass die rezeptionsgeschichtlich tonangebenden idealistischen und theologischen Interpretationsansätze dem Werk unangemessen sind. Als Alternative wird eine naturalistische Lesart entwickelt. Diese lebensrealistische Lesart zielt auf den Nachweis ab, dass Vico den menschlichen Geschichtsprozess als evolutionären und zugleich sinnvollen Vorgang begreift, dessen Ziel im Überleben der menschlichen Gattung besteht. Vicos Theorie der geschichtlichen Selbstregulierung stellt hierbei die symbolische und soziale Produktivität des Menschen als körperliches Naturwesen ins Zentrum, wobei die Entstehung von sozialen Institutionen und symbolischen Weltbildern als nicht-intendiertes Resultat subjektiv-sinnlicher Handlungsmotive begriffen wird. Detailliert herausgearbeitet wird die Leitidee Vicos, dass soziale Institutionen durch vorrationale Fiktionen stabilisiert werden, die der menschlichen Einbildungskraft entspringen. Insofern sind es soziale Mythen, die die Gesellschaft zusammenhalten. Mit der Orientierung seines systemtheoretisch angelegten Geschichtsdenkens an menschlichen Überlebensfragen vertritt Vico einen Standpunkt, der bis heute nichts Aktualität verloren hat.

Giambattista Vico (1668–1744) was an Italian philosopher, rhetorician, and historian. As one of the great thinkers of the Enlightenment, he exerted tremendous influence on the social sciences. He was the first to stress cultural and linguistic dimensions in the development of both the human mind and social institutions. Although his ideas on the relationship between mind and culture and his epistemology have inspired the work of many scholars in psychology, his sizeable influence has been scarcely acknowledged. The volume is organized in two sections. The first locates Vico in his historical context and in the landscape of contemporary human and social sciences. The second part presents those of Vico’s concepts that seem promising for the development of a new way of looking at psychological phenomena. In the book’s conclusion, Luca Tateo gathers the ideas of the volume’s contributors to suggest future development of the psychological sciences. This book aims to show how Vico’s insights can inspire future research in the psychological sciences. Es kommt oft anders, als man denkt," besagt die altbekannte Volksweisheit. Wie so oft bei Sprichwortern ist die Interpretation dieser recht vieldeutig. Eine mogliche Auslegungsvariante verweist darauf, dass Menschen durch ihr eigenes Handeln selbst dafur sorgen, dass es fur sie anders kommt, als sie denken. Das ist genau dann der Fall, wenn die Ergebnisse ihres Tuns sich von den eigentlichen Planen unterscheiden, die dem Handeln vorausgingen. Doch gerade die Diskrepanz zwischen den subjektiven Handlungsmotiven und objektiven Handlungsergebnissen eroffnen immense erkenntnistheoretische Spielraume, die auch innerhalb der Philosophie zu grosser Bedeutung gelangt sind. Aus dieser Volksweisheit lasst sich eine ganz bestimmte Denkfigur ableiten, die der amerikanische Physiker und Nobelpreistrager Richard Feynman (1918-1988) seinerzeit wie folgt formulierte: What I cannot create, I do not understand." Dieses Diktum, das ein ganzes philosophisches Projekt rahmt, und das heute, im Kontext der synthetischen Biologie in neuem Glanz zu erscheinen vermag, geht auf Namen wie Thomas von Aquin, Francis Bacon, Giambattista Vico oder auch Jaques Loeb zuruck. Vielfach wird angenommen, dass Krisen- und Prekarisierungserfahrungen Beschäftigte in die Defensive drängen: Ansprüche an die Arbeit würden zurückgenommen oder aufgegeben, Lebensentwürfe modifiziert oder eingeschränkt. Trifft das auch für Arbeitnehmer zu, die nicht in bedrohten oder prekären Beschäftigungsverhältnissen arbeiten – auf die »Arbeitnehmermitte«? In einer breit angelegten qualitativ-empirischen Untersuchung finden Hürtgen und Voswinkel bei Angehörigen dieser Gruppe auf den ersten Blick kaum Verunsicherung. Ansprüche an Arbeitsplatzsicherheit, Einkommen, Anerkennung und Kollegialität halten sie weiterhin für normal, ebenso die Vorstellung, dass Respekt, Selbstsorge, Schutz vor Überbeanspruchung und ein erfülltes Leben jenseits der Arbeit normative Geltung haben sollten. Auch abweichende Erfahrungen erschüttern diese Konzeption nicht, werden vielmehr von hier aus kritisiert. Auf den zweiten Blick zeigt sich allerdings, dass diese Beschäftigten die selbst erlebte Normalität keineswegs mehr als gesellschaftsweit gültig wahrnehmen. Sie erleben sich in einer »Sondersituation« und hegen Zweifel, ob ihre eigenen Normalitätsvorstellungen noch die soziale und normative Mitte der Gesellschaft repräsentieren.
