Als in den 1960er Jahren die »Hippies« aufkamen, erkannten darin manche eine »neue Jugendbewegung«. Tatsächlich fanden sich im alternativen Milieu der 1970er und 1980er Jahre nicht wenige Praktiken, politische Ideen und habituelle Muster, die an die Lebensreformbewegung der Jahrhundertwende erinnerten: freie Sexualität und Freikörperkultur, Siedlung auf dem Lande, alternative Haartracht und Bekleidung, Kritik der modernen Gesellschaft, Streben nach Gemeinschaft, politischer Radikalismus. Zugleich unterschieden sich die Kontexte dieser Kritik: Urbanisierung und industrielle Moderne auf der einen, postindustrieller und, auf der kulturellen Ebene, postmoderner »Strukturbruch« auf der anderen Seite. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger untersuchen zum einen, inwieweit sich diese Phänomene ähneln oder unterscheiden, und zum anderen fragen sie nach den Verbindungslinien personeller oder institutioneller Art sowie den Rezeptionsmustern der Lebensreform im Alternativmilieu. When the "hippies" emerged in the 1960s, contemporary observers spoke of a "new youth movement", relating them to the Jugendbewegung of the early 20th century. In fact, there were quite a few practices, political ideas, and habitual patterns in the alternative milieu of the 1970s and 1980s, which seemed to be familiar from the Lebensreform (life reform) movement of the turn of the century: free sexuality and nudism, settlement in the countryside, alternative hairstyles and clothing, criticism of modern society, striving for community, and political radicalism. At the same time, the contexts of this critique differed: urbanization and industrial modernity on the one hand, postindustrial and, on the cultural level, postmodern "structural break" on the other. The volume examines the extent to which the two phenomena were similar, but also looks at differences, personal or institutional links and patterns of reception.

In nineteenth-century Europe and North America, an organized vegetarian movement began warning of the health risks and ethical problems of meat eating. Presenting a vegetarian diet as a cure for the social ills brought on by industrialization and urbanization, this movement idealized South Asia as a model. In colonial India, where diets were far more varied than Western admirers realized, new motives for avoiding meat also took hold. Hindu nationalists claimed that vegetarianism would cleanse the body for anticolonial resistance, and an increasingly militant cow protection movement mobilized against meat eaters, particularly Muslims. Unearthing the connections among these developments and many others, Julia Hauser explores the global history of vegetarianism from the mid-nineteenth century to the early Cold War. She traces personal networks and exchanges of knowledge spanning Europe, the United States, and South Asia, highlighting mutual influence as well as the disconnects of cross-cultural encounters. Hauser argues that vegetarianism in this period was motivated by expansive visions of moral, physical, and even racial purification. Adherents were convinced that society could be changed by transforming the body of the individual. Hauser demonstrates that vegetarians in India and the West shared notions of purity, which drew some toward not only internationalism and anticolonialism but also racism, nationalism, and violence. Finding preoccupations with race and masculinity as well as links to colonialism and eugenics, she reveals the implication of vegetarian movements in exclusionary, hierarchical projects. Deeply researched and compellingly argued, A Taste for Purity rewrites the history of vegetarianism on a global scale.

Am Ende der 1970er Jahre entstand ein ästhetisch-subjektkulturelles Konzept in der deutschsprachigen Pop-Musik, das alles ‚Kalte‘ affirmierte: ‚Kälte-Pop‘. Bands wie Kraftwerk, DAF und Einstürzende Neubauten entwickelten als Gegenentwurf zum pop- wie gegenkulturell hegemonialen Wärme-Kult ein System von Motiven und Strategien, das all jene Zeichen und Prozesse der (Post-)Moderne ästhetisierte und glorifizierte, die in der bundesdeutschen Gesellschaft und vor allem im linksalternativen Milieu als negative Aspekte einer vermeintlich kalten Welt interpretiert wurden: Gefühlslosigkeit und Dehumanisierung, Industrie und Großstadt, Künstlichkeit und Entfremdung, Disziplin und körperliche Funktionalität, Schnee und Eis, Beton und Stahl sowie Computer, Maschinen und Roboter. Dabei schlugen die ‚Kälte‘-Akteur:innen eine Brücke zu den Historischen Avantgarden der 1920er Jahre und inszenierten sich stereotypisch als ‚kalte Deutsche‘. Die Arbeit analysiert unter Einbeziehung der transnationalen Verknüpfungen die ‚Kälte-Welle‘ (1978–1983) in der deutschen Pop-Musik, ihre Bildwelten und Codes, historischen Bezüge und Rezeption, das historische Umfeld ihrer Entstehung sowie nachfolgende Erscheinungsformen ‚kalter‘ Musik, die sich bis heute in der internationalen Pop-Musik und bei Acts wie Rammstein zeigen.
