Excerpt from Lecture on the Study of History, Applied to the Progress of Civilization The offspring of ages, humanity, that ever-moving and ever-changing, multiple being, sums up all human existence; and all things earthly, from the empire that crumbles into dust, to the heart that breaks in its agony, are absorbed in its vast recipients, and modify it with their substances and their energies. Hence, death is but an ascending transformation; and the life of nations a time-mark in universal life - a stray leaf from a majestic tree - a page from a speaking volume, by which we explain the import of the present and the future, through the revealings of the past. Such is the position which man occupies in the panorama of history, the philosophy of which, applied to the civilization of mankind, we mean to glance at in this disquisition. But before proceeding with the subject, we would bespeak the indulgence of the society for one general remark, which may not be unnecessary to a better understanding of the views which we shall unfold, in the fulfilment of the duty kindly assigned us by the partiality of our associates. That axiom - for it may justly be so termed - is, that the development of society is wrought, not in a direct, but in a spiral, line. Humanity, in its ascending course, has, not unfrequently, recoiled upon itself, the more forcibly to act against some sudden and intervening obstacle. It fulfils its destinies by two distinct and alternate movements - one of creation and the other of destruction. The latter - in the midst of which the former order of things is annulled, whether by reason of its dangers or its insufficiency - obtains till the advent of the providential hour, that reveals a new principle of order to the world. Excerpt from The Study of History: A Lecture The first question which the student of history has now 'to ask himself is, Whether history is governed by' necessary laws? If it is, it ought to be written and read as a science. It may be an imperfect science as yet, owing to the complexity of the phenomena, the incompleteness of the observations, the want of -a rational method; but, in its nature, it is a science, and 1s capable of being brought to perfection. Excerpt from On History and the Study of History: Three Lectures These are examples of views about the study of History which I am constantly meeting. Let us examine a little the ideas of its relation to educa tion which they imply: the idea that History is good for those who have what is called a taste for it, but useless for those who have not; the idea that History may be good as a part of some kinds of education, but has no place in that kind of edu cation which goes by the name of scientific; the, idea that the study of History is properly no part of education at all, but forms a part of what is called general reading, which one can take up at any time, or pursue in any manner; or, again, the idea that the study of History is the process of packing away in the memory, in their proper order, as great a number as possible of facts and names and dates, and that whoever is unsuccessful in that is incapable of learning History. Excerpt from The Study of History: Two Lectures The great source of Progress is love of our kind; as the great obstacle to Progress is self-love, which perverts our moral activity, turns our intellect to the indulgence of ambition and vanity instead of the pursuit of truth, and destroys, through indolence and vice, the industry which adds to the common store. Love of our kind as opposed to self-love is the cardinal and distinguishing doctrine of Christianity. On this vital point the newest and most daring philosophy has only been able to repeat the Christian precept with a verbal change, or a change which, if more than verbal, is wrong. If live for others means more than love one another, it means total annihilation of self, which is an impracticable dream. Excerpt from A Lecture on the Study of History: Delivered at Cambridge, June 11, 1895 You have often heard it said that Modern History is a subject to which neither beginning nor end can be assigned. No beginning, because the dense web of the fortunes of man is woven without a void; because, in society as in nature, the structure is continuous, and we can trace things back uninterruptedly, until we dimly descry the Declaration of Indepen dence in the forests of Germany. No end, because, on the same principle, history made and history making are scientifically inseparable and separately unmeaning. Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of History: Civil, Ecclesiastical, and Literary The links between the most remote past and the present are comparatively few. They are to be found in the histories of the Israelites, the Greeks, the Romans, and in that of ones own country, be it England, or France, or Germany. The Israelitish history (that of the Bible) introduces us to that of Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, and Persia. Greek history brings us to the very beginning of European civilisation, and of free democratical governments. Roman history is the history of struggles for a mixed free constitutional government, with encouraging success, which failed only through the wars of conquest that led to the necessary establishment of the Empire. The history of our own country, or that of France or Germany, is more or less connected with that of the civilised world. In the excellent Students' Manuals published by Murray there is a complete historical library compiled by writers of eminence, and well adapted for the present use or future reference of the reader, as introductory to the study of our great historians. 2. In the present work an attempt is made to exhibit the leading events in the history of the world contemporaneously (as far as is possible with due regard to chronological order). For the convenience of the student, the narrative is arranged in thirteen periods. At the conclusion of each of these periods there is a brief retrospective review of the position and relative importance of the leading political organisations and of the then state of the world. Excerpt from Introductory Lectures on the Study of History: Delivered Before the University of Durham Thus it has happened that almost every thing which can be made the subject of narrative, and much besides, has been historically treated. In this way the arts and sciences have afforded matter for historical inquiry; astronomy, mathematics, chemistry, poetry, painting, romance; districts, cities, towns, villages, even single buildings, have had their historians; nations, races, families, even individuals, have in like manner furnished materials for similar compositions: so likewise morals, religion, civilization, literature, and many other topics, have been treated in the same way. Again, subjects which are not suited to narrative have borrowed the name of history; the conduct and habits of animals for instance, every part and portion of matter, animate and inanimate, is brought within the domain of what is called natural history. Thus, that which we call natural eluded by history, though a mere register of facts, would be properly entitled to the distinction conferred upon it.
