"I have been much impressed in teaching students by the fact that you can manifestly interest every member of a large class when you are teaching mental diseases clinically, while you fail to reach some of them by systematic descriptions. Direct appeals to the facts of nature, however fragmentary, make more impression on them than any amount of elaborate description. These considerations led me to publish the following lectures as a text-book for my students in the University of Edinburgh; and I venture to indulge the hope that it will also supply a want which I know many busy practitioners of medicine feel. The two hundred and sixty cases of mental disease which I describe and embody in those lectures may, I hope, assist some of my brethren in the profession in their treatment of a very obscure and troublesome class of diseases. In the selection of those cases, I had in view rather their applicability as good, ordinary types and guides than their rarity or their striking characters. The tendency in publishing mental cases has been to fix on wonderful rather than useful examples. To render the work complete as regards the wants of the American practitioner, Dr. Charles F. Folsom, with the assistance of Hollis R. Bailey, Esq., has added an appendix on the laws of the United States, and of the several States, relating to the custody of the insane"--Preface. Excerpt from Lectures on Nervous and Mental Diseases When the writer began to lecture on Nervous Diseases nine years ago he was surprised to find so few homeopathic works upon this important subject. As the years went by he waited anxiously for the appearance of a work combining the anatomy, physiology, pathology, and the homeopathic therapeutics, but none made its appearance. Several works have come out partially covering the field, but none to which the student could turn and find what he desired stated in a brief and condensed form. This fact led the writer to publish the lectures which follow as a text-book, covering the above points, and in addition show ing in what diseases benefits from the application of electricity may be expected, and the best methods of applying it in the various diseases considered. The basis of the work is the lectures delivered before the students of the Kansas City Homeopathic College for the past nine years. It includes the main facts which relate to mental and nervous diseases, gathered and condensed from the works of all schools, from journals, and every available source. In the preparation of this work the author has used freely from every available book and journal published on the subject of nervous and mental diseases and electro-therapeutics, so that the student not only gets the benefit of the writer's experience but also that of all the leading writers on these subjects. This information could only be found scattered through a greater number of books and journals than are within reach of students and practitioners in general. It has been the aim and endeavor of the writer to simplify the various subjects so that students and practitioners will easily understand them. In regard to the manner in which he has dealt with the various subjects, the words of Ruskin would apply where he says: Certainly it is excellent discipline for an author to feel that he must say all that he has to say in the fewest possible words, or his reader is sure to skip them; and in the plainest possible words, or his reader will certainly misunderstand them. They were revised and again delivered at the session of 1880 - 81. Frequent inquiries were made by the students and others for the best work on insanity, one' giving at the same time a knowledge of homopathictherapeutics, but I was obliged to answer that, with the exception of Jahr's Mental Diseases, we had no treatise upon that subject; hence the attempt to supply the want by the publica tion of these lectures, imperfect as they are. Additions and changes have been made, and the book is now given, not as a complete text-book, but as containing a fairly correct summary of our present knowledge of insanity and its homopathic treatment.
