The urge for regional identity has not declined in the process of globalization. Rather, heritage is used to develop regional distinctiveness and to charge identities with a past. Particularly helpful for this aim are creation stories, Golden Ages or recent, shared traumas. Some themes such as the Roman era or the Second World War appear easier to appropriate than, for example, prehistory. This book assesses the role of heritage in the construction of regional identities in Western Europe. It contains case studies on early medieval heritage in Alsace and Euregio-Meuse Rhine, industrial heritage in the German Ruhr area and competing memories in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region in the Netherlands. It presents new insights into the process of heritage production on a regional level in relationship to processes of identity construction. The theoretical analysis of "heritage" and "regional identity" is innovative as these concepts were hardly analysed in relation to each other before. This book also offers insights into policy, tourism, spatial development and regional development to policymakers, politicians, designers and professionals in the heritage and tourism industries.

How does our colonial past echo through today's global politics? How have former empire-builders sought vindication or atonement, and formerly colonized states reversal or retribution? This groundbreaking book presents a panoramic view of attitudes to empires past and present, seen not only through the hard politics of international power structures but also through the nuances of memory, historiography and national and minority cultural identities. Bringing together leading historians, poitical scientists and international relations scholars from across the globe, Echoes of Empire emphasizes Europe's colonial legacy whilst also highlighting the importance of non-European power centres- Ottoman, Russian, Chinese, Japanese- in shaping world politics, then and now. Echoes of Empire bridges the divide between disciplines to trace the global routes travelled by objects, ideas and people and forms a radically different notion of the term 'empire' itself. This will be an essential companion to courses on international relations and imperial history as well as a fascinating read for anyone interested in Wesern hegemony, North-South relations, global power shifts and the longue duree.

Contemporary India And South Africa written by Sujata Patel and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-12 with Social Science categories.

This book deals with the legacies of the Indian experiences of migration and diaspora in South Africa. It highlights the social imaginaries of the migrants and citizens as they negotiate between a reconstructed notion of ‘India’ and their real present and future in the country of citizenship. Both South Africa and India have had a long history of group-based identity movements against exploitation around caste and race, intersecting with class, gender, language, religion and region. The combined history has allowed them to participate in novel ways in the global arena as regional powers. The book suggests that the question of identity concerns itself with exploitation and oppression of excluded groups in both countries. The authors are particularly attentive to the manner in which the two democratic states have confronted the challenges of history together with contemporary demands of inclusion and discuss the dilemmas involved in resolving them. The volume also raises questions regarding future roles, especially in the fields of education and the environment. It will be of interest to those in the fields of sociology, political science, international relations, history, migration and diaspora studies, as well as to the general reader.

France S Colonial Legacies written by Fiona Barclay and has been published by University of Wales Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-15 with History categories.

In an era of commemoration, France’s Colonial Legacies contributes to the debates taking place in France about the place of empire in the contemporary life of the nation, debates that have been underway since the 1990s and that now reach across public life and society with manifestations in the French parliament, media and universities. France’s empire and the gradual process of its loss is one of the defining narratives of the contemporary nation, contributing to the construction of its image both on the international stage and at home. While certain intellectuals present the imperial period as an historical irrelevance that ended in the years following the Second World War, the contested legacies of France’s colonies continue to influence the development of French society in the view of scholars of the postcolonial. This volume surveys the memorial practices and discourses that are played out in a range of arenas, drawing on the expertise of researchers working in the fields of politics, media, cultural studies, literature and film to offer a wide-ranging picture of remembrance in contemporary France.
