In 'The Life & Legacy of Henry David Thoreau,' the author intricately weaves together biographical details, philosophical insights, and cultural critique to explore the profound impact Thoreau has had on American literature and thought. Employing a reflective and lyrical style, the book delves into Thoreau's transcendentalist ideals, showcasing his advocacy for simplicity, nature, and civil disobedience. The narrative is rich in historical context, beautifully framing Thoreau's challenges and triumphs against the backdrop of 19th-century America, particularly as tensions around industrialization and social reform began to escalate. The author, a well-versed scholar in American literature and philosophy, presents Thoreau not just as a writer, but as a profound thinker whose life experiences'Äîincluding his time in nature and conflicts with societal norms'Äîshaped his views. Thoreau's intense observation of the natural world and commitment to individualism arose from his activism and deep philosophical inquiries, significantly influencing future generations, from environmentalists to civil rights leaders. This book is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand not only the life of Thoreau but also the enduring legacy of his ideas that resonate today. The Lasseter legend is well known in Australia, or at least it was when I was a younger man. The story goes that a man named Harrold Lasseter whilst journeying across the desert from Alice Springs to the west coast around 1900 reportedly discovered a fabulously rich reef of gold. Nothing was done about the discovery until many years later in the 1930’s when Lasseter mounted an expedition to relocate the fabulous reef, an expedition that resulted in his death and no reef. Since that time many people have ventured into the desert in search of the reef with no success. This book details a geologists quest for the reef and his own fabulous gold find which become embroiled in criminal conspiracy and action. Of course the hero geologist triumphs and a World class series of gold mines is established. It should however be noted that the author believes that Lasseters gold reef never existed.

The Environmental Legacy Of The Uc Natural Reserve System written by Peggy L. Fiedler and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-04 with Nature categories.
The UC Natural Reserve System, established in 1965 to support field research, teaching, and public service in natural environments, has become a prototype of conservation and land stewardship looked to by natural resource managers throughout the world. From its modest beginnings of seven sites, the UC NRS has grown to encompass more than 750,000 wildland acres. This book tells the story of how a few forward-thinking UC faculty, who’d had their research plots and teaching spots destroyed by development and habitat degradation, devised a way to save representative examples of many of California’s major ecosystems. Working together with conservation-minded donors and landowners, with state and federal agencies, and with land trusts and private conservation organizations, they founded what would become the world’s largest university-administered natural reserve system—a legacy of lasting significance and utility. This lavishly illustrated volume, which includes images by famed photographers Ansel Adams and Galen Rowell, describes the natural and human histories of the system’s many reserves. Located throughout California, these wildland habitats range from coastal tide pools to inland deserts, from lush wetlands to ancient forests, and from vernal pools to oak savannas. By supporting teaching, research, and public service within such protected landscapes, the UC NRS contributes to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth.
