Wireless building automation solutions promise to revolutionize home and commercial building management where fast deployment, increased building efficiency and optimal occupant comfort and convenience are top priorities. The ability to support people and/or device mobility, easy building reconfiguration, data, voice and video applications plus emerging indoor location-based services will unlock their future success. Wireless building automation systems are still at an early stage of development; however, as more and more building functions and applications are controlled electronically and wirelessly, constant occupant surveillance, tracking, personal profiling and security breaches, would raise deep concerns about the survival of privacy. Building privacy and security in the initial design should ensure that all necessary or required controls exist to protect access to and dissemination of personal information over the wireless building automation network. The applicability of the new EU regulatory framework for electronic communications and services will depend on the legal qualification of the network and services: private, public or a mixture of both.

Information technology has served to revolutionise the use, exchange, and protection of information. The growth of the internet, the convergence of technologies as well as the development of user generated and social networking sites has meant that significant amounts of person data as well as copyrighted materials are now readily accessible. Within this changing cultural landscape the legal concepts of privacy, data protection, intellectual property and criminality have necessarily had to develop and adapt. In this volume a number of international scholars consider this process and whether it has merely been a question of the law adapting to technology or whether technology has been forced to adapt to law. Technologies have wrought a culture shift it is therefore apposite to ask whether legal concepts, as reflections of culture, should also change. It is in this volume where papers on privacy date protection, intellectual protection and cyber crime begin address this question. This book was published as a special issue of International review of Law Computers and Technology.

Today, consent is a fundamental concept in the European legal framework on data protection. The analysis of the historical and theoretical context carried out in this book reveals that consent was not an intrinsic notion in the birth of data protection. The concept of consent was included in data protection legislation in order to enhance the role of the data subject in the data protection arena, and to allow the data subject to have more control over the collection and processing of his/her personal information. This book examines the concept of consent and its requirements in the Data Protection Directive, taking into account contemporary considerations on bioethics and medical ethics, as well as recent developments in the framework of the review of the Directive. It further studies issues of consent in electronic communications, carrying out an analysis of the consent-related provisions of the ePrivacy Directive.

The increased use of technology is necessary in order for industrial control systems to maintain and monitor industrial, infrastructural, or environmental processes. The need to secure and identify threats to the system is equally critical. Securing Critical Infrastructures and Critical Control Systems: Approaches for Threat Protection provides a full and detailed understanding of the vulnerabilities and security threats that exist within an industrial control system. This collection of research defines and analyzes the technical, procedural, and managerial responses to securing these systems.

An International Approach to Sustainability was written by Steven P. Driver Ph.D. to educate anyone interested in reducing operational costs in buildings with an interest in making a difference in climate change. Through the application of energy conservation techniques, whether it's your home or workplace, this e-book can help you reduce energy consumption. This e-book was written to educate home owners, building managers, real estate developers, university and campus facility maintenance personnel, employees, and anyone else with an interest in helping our environment. This publication offers an understanding of some available technologies to mitigate energy waste. Having overcome proprietary barriers which restricted the full understanding of how to combine artificial and human intelligence with respect to building commissioning is what makes this publication unique. After completing several years of post-doctoral research to understanding differences and benefits between ongoing and retroactive commissioning, we now have a better vision of what is required to make our buildings sustainable with respect to energy consumed. This publication includes over 30 years of experience in energy management and formed the basis for a U.S trademark on Sustainable Commissioning, a concept explained in this e-book. The journey continues in researching new energy reduction technologies and piloting them confirming further effectiveness of the concept. The content in this e-book was validated through the deployment of several case studies applying the Sustainable Commissioning concept. The results from those case studies have validated an average return on investment of 62% with a 75% internal rate of return resulting in an 18 month simple pay back. The results demonstrate not only how to save operational cost, but environmental benefits averaging 1,009 metric tons of carbon emissions avoided annually for each case study.
