Vodou has often served as a scapegoat for Haiti’s problems, from political upheavals to natural disasters. This tradition of scapegoating stretches back to the nation’s founding and forms part of a contest over the legitimacy of the religion, both beyond and within Haiti’s borders. The Spirits and the Law examines that vexed history, asking why, from 1835 to 1987, Haiti banned many popular ritual practices. To find out, Kate Ramsey begins with the Haitian Revolution and its aftermath. Fearful of an independent black nation inspiring similar revolts, the United States, France, and the rest of Europe ostracized Haiti. Successive Haitian governments, seeking to counter the image of Haiti as primitive as well as contain popular organization and leadership, outlawed “spells” and, later, “superstitious practices.” While not often strictly enforced, these laws were at times the basis for attacks on Vodou by the Haitian state, the Catholic Church, and occupying U.S. forces. Beyond such offensives, Ramsey argues that in prohibiting practices considered essential for maintaining relations with the spirits, anti-Vodou laws reinforced the political marginalization, social stigmatization, and economic exploitation of the Haitian majority. At the same time, she examines the ways communities across Haiti evaded, subverted, redirected, and shaped enforcement of the laws. Analyzing the long genealogy of anti-Vodou rhetoric, Ramsey thoroughly dissects claims that the religion has impeded Haiti’s development.

Have you ever wondered why multitudes of people are entrapped in a morass of debilitating circumstances of poverty, lack, sickness, defeat and other webs of demonic entanglement? In this publications, Apostle Frequency Revelator unpacks the divine truths that many of God's people are agonized in this manner simply because of their lack of understanding of the spiritual laws governing the legal realm in which we operate. The truth is that the severity of a man's situation isn't the problem but rather, his ignorance of spiritual laws in his bane. In the natural realm, any man who doesn't understand the demands or requirements of the law or does not seek legal counsel with regard to a legal matter levied against him in the court of law can actually loose the case simply because he lacks legal knowledge. In some quarters of the society, others have gone to the extent of being detained in jail for the crimes they never committed simply because they lacked legal representation in the court of law. As it is in the natural, so it is in the spiritual realm. In this publications, Apostle Frequency Revelator unpacks the reality that dozens of believers suffer tragedies and face calamities in their lives simply because they are completely lost at sea as to how to take advantage of spiritual laws as constituted in the Word of God. In some instances, multitudes of folks have gone to the extremes of frustration and aborting their God-given destinies simply because they are still sailing their boats through shallow streams of spiritual understanding as far as spiritual legal matters are concerned. This is to tell you that spiritual laws are vital keys that unlock the doors into the supernatural and accentuate an avenue through which divine substances can be transacted to the natural realm. In retrospect to the spiritual legal realm, there are laws and principles that God has put in place by which He governs the universe and extricably controls every fabric of creation in his hand. These are categorically physical laws which govern the natural realm and spiritual laws which govern the realm of the spirit. In the natural realm, the term, "law" alludes to a body of legal principles that govern the moral conduct of humanity in a particular country. Natural laws govern the natural realm and the principles by which humanity interacts with other domains of life on the earthly realm. For example, there is a law of gravity which stipulates that if you throw an object up in the air, it will evidently crash back onto the earth; then there is a law of flotation which allows ships and boats to float on water, then there is a law of aerodynamics that enables an aeroplane to fly and the law of electricity which helps us generate heat and light energy. The reality is that when we operate in obedience to these physical laws within nature, we reap positive results but when we violate them, the repercussions are severe. In a similar vein in which there are laws of gravity which governs how to operate in the natural realm, there are also spiritual laws that govern the spirit realm or how to operate in the supernatural. As much as there are physical laws, there are also spiritual laws which are the highest class of laws in the universe governing and controlling the operation of humanity in the realm of the spirit. These are spiritual legal principles that one can tap into in order to manoeuvre your way through the corridors of the spirit world, to manifest the reality of God's power in the natural realm. However, failure to master the art of operating in congruence with these spiritual laws has far reaching spiritual consequences, one of which is setting oneself up for extreme disadvantage. Hence, it is imperative that you master the art of how to unlock the destinies of people's lives and nations from the legal dimension of the Spirit. The key is in understanding the judicial system of the spirit realm as it runs parallel to that of the natural .

This volume seeks to foreground a borderless history and geography of South, Southeast, and East Asian littoral zones that would be maritime-focused, and thereby explore the ancient connections and dynamics of interaction that favoured the encounters among the cultures found throughout the region stretching from the Indian Ocean littorals to the Western Pacific, from the early historical period to the present. Transcending the artificial boundaries of macro-regions and nation-states, and trying to bridge the arbitrary divide between (inherently cosmopolitan) high cultures (e.g. Sanskritic, Sinitic, or Islamicate) and local or indigenous cultures, this multidisciplinary volume explores the metaphor of Monsoon Asia as a vast geo-environmental area inhabited by speakers of numerous language phyla, which for millennia has formed an integrated system of littorals where crops, goods, ideas, cosmologies, and ritual practices circulated on the sea-routes governed by the seasonal monsoon winds. The collective body of work presented in the volume describes Monsoon Asia as an ideal theatre for circulatory dynamics of cultural transfer, interaction, acceptance, selection, and avoidance, and argues that, despite the rich ethnic, linguistic and sociocultural diversity, a shared pattern of values, norms, and cultural models is discernible throughout the region.

Using the basic economic principle of making decisions using a cost-benefit framework—and how changes in one or the other can result in a different decision—this book uncovers how various groups responded to incentives provided by the Prohibition legislation. Using this calculus, it is clear that even criminals are rational characters, responding to incentives and opportunities provided by the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act. The book begins with a broad look at the adaptations of the law’s targets: the wine, beer, and liquor industries. It then turns to specific people (Violators, Line Tip-Toers, Enablers, and Hypocrites), sharing their stories of economic adaptation to bring economic lessons to life. Due to its structure, the book can be read in parts or as a whole and is suitable for short classroom reading assignments or individual pleasure reading.

"Following the end of Prohibition in 1933, demand for moonshine remained high due to taxes imposed on large liquor producers. Seeking to answer this demand were the distillers of Appalachia who, having established illegal networks of moonshine distribution under Prohibition, continued their activities and effectively skirted the federal liquor tax scheme. Spirits of Just Men chronicles the Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935, held in Franklin County, Virginia, a place that many still refer to as the "Moonshine Capital of the World." While the trial itself made national news, Thompson uses the event as a stepping-off point to explore Blue Ridge Mountain culture, economy, and political engagement in the 1930 illustrating how participation in the moonshine trade was a rational and savvy choice for farmers and community members struggling to maintain their way of life amidst the pressures of the Great Depression and pull of the timber and coal-mining industries in Virginia. Through Thompson's prose, local characters come alive as he pays particular attention to the stories of a key witness for the defense, Miss Ora Harrison, an Episcopalian missionary to the region, and Elder Goode Hash, itinerant Primitive Baptist preacher and juror in a related murder trial. Thompson explores how local religious belief both clashed with and condoned the moonshine trade and how stills and the trade enabled a distinctive cultural formation in the region that goes far beyond the hillbilly stereotype alive today. Not only is his work is based on extensive oral histories and local archival material, but Thompson himself is from the area and his grandparents were involved in not only the moonshine trade but the trial as well"--Provided by publisher.
