Two hundred million years ago the earth consisted of a single vast continent, Pangea, surrounded by a great planetary sea. Continental drift tore apart Pangaea, and for millennia the hemispheres were separate, evolving almost entirely different suites of plants and animals. Columbus's arrival in the Americas brought together these long-separate worlds. Many historians believe that this collision of ecosystems and cultures - the Columbian Exchange - was the most consequential event in human history since the Neolithic Revolution. And it was the most consequential event in biological history since the extinction of the dinosaurs. Beginning with the world of microbes and moving up the species ladder to mankind, Mann rivetingly describes the profound effect this exchanging of species had on the culture of both continents.

Winner of the 2020 Fray Francisco Atanasio Domínguez Award from the Historical Society of New Mexico This magisterial volume unveils Richard and Shirley Flint's deep research into the Latin American and Spanish archives in an effort to track down the history of the participants who came north with the Coronado Expedition in 1540. Through their investigation into thousands of baptismal records, proofs of service, letters, journals, and other primary materials, they provide social and cultural documentation on the backgrounds of hundreds of the individuals who embarked on the Coronado expedition. The resulting data reveal patterns that shed decisive new light on the core reasons behind the Coronado expedition to Tierra Nueva, revealing, most importantly, that the expedition to Tierra Nueva was part of a complex plan to finally complete the Columbian project--that is, to locate a direct, westward route from Spain to the Asian sources of silks, porcelains, spices, and dyes. Along the way the Flints show us, in far greater detail than ever before, the individuals who made up the expedition--members of the upper echelons of Spanish society to thousands of Nahuatl-speaking Natives of Nueva España and largely anonymous slaves, servants, and women who made the enterprise possible and kept it running, with a course set for Asia by land.

World Without End written by Hugh Thomas and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-03 with History categories.

Following Rivers of Gold and The Golden Age, World Without End is the conclusion of a magisterial three-volume history of the Spanish Empire by Hugh Thomas, its foremost worldwide authority World Without End is the climax of Hugh Thomas's great history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. It describes the conquest of Paraguay and the River Plate, of the Yucatan in Mexico, the only partial conquest of Chile, and battles with the French over Florida, and then, in the 1580s, the extraordinary projection of Spanish power across the Pacific to conquer the Philippines. More significantly, it describes how the Spanish ran the greatest empire the world had seen since Rome - as well as conquistadores, the book is people with viceroys, judges, nobles, bishops, inquisitors and administrators of many different kinds, often in conflict with one another, seeking to organise the native populations into towns, to build cathedrals, hospitals and universities. Behind them - sometimes ahead of them - came the religious orders, the Franciscans, Dominicans, Augustinians, and finally the Jesuits, builders of convents and monasteries, many of them of astonishing beauty, and reminders of the pervasiveness of religion and the self-confidence of the age. Towering above them all, though moving rarely from the palace of the Escorial outside Madrid, is the figure of King Philip II, the central figure in the book. The Venetian ambassador thought him 'the arbiter of the world'. Once the Philippines had been consolidated, Philip's advisors contemplated an invasion of China: the Jesuit Father Sanchez called it 'the greatest enterprise which has ever been proposed to any monarch in the world'. It was an enterprise never undertaken, but never explicitly abandoned. Was it a great or a terrible empire? In contrast to other empire builders, the Spaniards entered upon arguments with each other about their right to rule other peoples, and their ruthlessness was often tempered by humanity. Hugh Thomas's conclusion is unequivocal: 'The speed with which the sixteenth-century conquistadores conquered such large territories on two vast continents, and the comparable success of missionaries with large populations of Indians, stands as one of the supreme epics of both valour and imagination by Europeans.' 'One of the most productive and wide-ranging historians of modern times' New York Times 'The greatest historian of the Spanish speaking world' Guardian (Year Ahead in Books 2014) HUGH THOMAS received the Calvo Serer, Boccacio, and Nonino prizes in Italy in 2009, and in 2008 was made a Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in France. His many books include his classic history of The Spanish Civil War (winner, the Somerset Maugham Award); The Suez Affair; Cuba: The Pursuit of Freedom; An Unfinished History of the World; The Slave Trade; and the two previous volumes in this trilogy, Rivers of Gold and The Golden Age.

Trans Pacific Encounters written by Koichi Hagimoto and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-26 with Literary Criticism categories.

While the origin of trans-pacific contact between Asia and the New World can be traced as far back as the pre-Columbian period, it was not until the fifteenth century that communication across the Pacific became constant. Despite this history, the myriad encounters that constitute the basic contours of transpacific studies have often been overshadowed by the traditional emphasis on transatlantic studies. In addition, although socio-political ties between Asia and Latin America have drawn attention among politicians and economists in recent years, there continues to be a critical void in the studies of literary, cultural, and historical relations between the two regions. This book challenges this double negligence, and engages in a global discussion about the relationship between Asia and the Hispanic world, which includes not only Spanish America, but also the Philippines under the Spanish empire. The essays presented in this volume explore the multidimensional nature of the trans-pacific intersection through historical studies, as well as literary and cultural criticism. Topics investigated include, for example, the overlooked aspect of the Hispanic Philippines, the “Orientalized” images of Latin American colonial art, modernista and vanguardista writings about India, and the experience of a Peruvian migrant worker in contemporary Japan. The diverse perspectives that the authors offer create a dialogue with each other, and together provide an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of trans-pacific encounters, both past and present.

Western Visions Of The Far East In A Transpacific Age 1522 1657 written by Christina H. Lee and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-17 with History categories.

Bringing to bear the latest developments across various areas of research and disciplines, this collection provides a broad perspective on how Western Europe made sense of a complex, multi-faceted, and by and large Sino-centered East and Southeast Asia. The volume covers the transpacific period--after Magellan's opening of the transpacific route to the Far East and before the eventual dominance of the region by the British and the Dutch. In contrast to the period of the Enlightenment, during which Orientalist discourses arose, this initial period of encounters and conquest is characterized by an enormous curiosity and a desire to seize--not only materially but intellectually--the lands and peoples of East Asia. The essays investigate European visions of the Far East--particularly of China and Japan--and examine how and why particular representations of Asians and their cultural practices were constructed, revised, and adapted. Collectively, the essays show that images of the Far East were filtered by worldviews that ranged from being, on the one hand, universalistic and relatively equitable towards cultures to the other extreme, unilaterally Eurocentric.
