“Il mare, odiato dai popoli che credevano le sue tempeste esempio di malvagità, e fuggivano lungi dalle sue sponde, adorato da altri come creatore degli dei e degli uomini, amato con passione ardente da grandi poeti, ha sempre costretto e costringe l'uomo a sognare, a meditare innanzi alla sua immensità”. Così l'autrice, eminente studiosa di folklore oltreché letterata e poetessa, conclude il primo capitolo che è una sorta di introduzione alla successiva esposizione delle leggende sorte intorno al mare, soprattutto nordiche, mediterranee e slave, ma anche con qualche riferimento alle tradizioni orientali. In tal modo il lettore ha modo di incontrare gli eroi dell'Edda, del Kalevala e delle biline russe, di subire il fascino delle diverse versioni delle leggende relative all'Olandese volante e al suo capitano, di sorprendersi nel constatare come la fantasia umana abbia popolato gli abissi marini di una straordinaria quantità di abitanti: fantasmi e sirene, divinità e re del mare, streghe e mostri. Leggende del mare venne pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1894 dalla casa editrice Loscher; nella conversione in ebook è stata rispettata l'ortografia originaria. Maria Savi-Lopez (Napoli, 1846 – 1940) è stata una musicista, poetessa, insegnante (all'Istituto Vittorio Emanuele II di Napoli ed all'istituto femminile Bech per stranieri) italiana, ma soprattutto studiosa di folklore e di leggende e tradizioni popolari.
