Das Lehrbuch erscheint in der dritten Auflage unter unverändertem Titel. Das ist nicht selbstverständlich zu einem Zeitpunkt, da Sinn und Nutzen von Pharmakognosie für die Ausbildung des Offizinapothekers durch nicht wenige bestritten oder jedenfalls in Zweifel gezogen werden, und in einem Augenblick, da das Fach unter der neuen Bezeichnung Pharmazeutische Biologie in der neuen Approbationsordnung für Apotheker der Bundesrepublik Deutschland auf geführt wird. Zweifelsohne ist Biologie von fundamentaler Bedeutung für alle Zweige des Arzneimittelwesens, eine gebührende Berücksichtigung im Lehrplan des Pharmaziestudenten daher berechtigt. Ob sich das neue Fach Pharmazeutische Biologie hinsichtlich Lehrinhalt und Lehrmethode unterscheiden wird von der bisher manchenorts praktizierten Pharmazeutischen Botanik, wird die Zukunft zeigen. Was unter der Bezeichnung "Pharmazeutische Biologie" oder "Pharma zeutische Arzneimittellehre" oder "Pharmakognosie" an Lehrinhalten subsumiert wird, ist nicht zwingend vom Wesen des Fachgebietes her vorgeschrieben und international gleichartig. Was wir im vorliegenden Lehrbuch anbieten, sind Grund lagen für eine Art Spezialitätenkunde der Arzneimittel biogener Herkunft, in begriffen der sogenannten Phytotherapeutika. Das bedeutet eine Einschränkung gegenüber einer Darstellung als pharmazeutische Biologie. Traditionell ist unsere Darstellung insofern, als die Deskription im Vordergrund steht, allerdings nicht die botanisch-morphologische, sondern die phytochemische Beschreibung der Drogen und Arzneipflanzen. Auf der anderen Seite setzen wir Pharmakognosie durchaus nicht gleich mit Phytochemie. Die Biosynthese der Naturstoffe ist für uns nicht Selbstzweck.
