Sowie als Anleitung zur Naturhistorischen Untersuchung Vegetabilischer Rohstoffe Ist ja selbst diese einfache Untersuchungsmethode fur den Ungeubten nicht ohne Schwierigkeit. Es durften daher die ein gedruckten Holzschnitte als wesentliche Erleichterung willkommen sein, indem die meisten derselben zeigen sollen, was am scharfen Querschnitt mit blossem Auge oder mit der Lupe gesehen werden kann und namentlich was zur Charakteristik wesentlich ist. Da die Abbildungen nicht schematisch sondern nach bestimmten Ezem plaren entworfen sind, so darf man sich nicht irre machen lassen, wenn dieselben nicht auf jedes beliebige Exemplar vollstandig passen; man muss zwischen Wesentlichem und Individuellem' unterscheiden und deshalb die Figur nie ohne die Beschreibung gebrauchen. Dieses ist auch deshalb nothig, weil die Manier des Holzschnittes nicht gestattet, alle Verhaltnisse so genau darzustellen wie es z. B. Beim Steindruck moglich ware. So gehen die Unterschiede in der Farbung, zwischen hell und dunkel, durchsichtig und undurchsichtig nicht immer unmittelbar aus den Figuren hervor, welche sich vielmehr hauptsachlich auf die Darstellung der Configuration der anatomischen Systeme be schranken.
