Die theoretisch-empirischen Perspektiven von Sozialwissenschaften im Generellen und Sozialer Arbeit im Speziellen heben auf die Erforschung und Bearbeitung lebenspraktischer Fragen ab. Lebenspraxen werden dabei innerhalb eines Kontinuums von menschlicher Verwirklichung und Entfaltung einerseits (flourishing), d.h. einem gelingenden oder guten Leben, und aus Nachteilen resultierendem menschlichen Leiden andererseits (suffering) verortet. Leiden wird gefasst als lebensweltlich relevante Verhinderung von Zugängen zu erstrebenswerten Daseins- und Handlungsmöglichkeiten sowie deren materiell-ökonomischen, sozialen und kulturellen Voraussetzungen. Dem Sachverhalt, dass menschliche Lebensführungsweisen faktisch von Leiden geprägt sind, steht die wissenschaftliche Vernachlässigung einer theoretisch-konzeptuellen Auseinandersetzung mit Leiden gegenüber. Es fehlt an einer überzeugenden begrifflichen Bestimmung und einem theoretischen Modell, welches neben weiteren disziplinimmanenten Erkenntnissen eine analytisch-normative, d.h. nicht nur phänomenbeschreibende Folie für sozialarbeiterische Handlungszusammenhänge offeriert. Dieses Desiderat bearbeitet der Beitrag "Leid(en)", indem ein theoriearchitektonischer Entwurf vorlegt wird, der Leiden in seinen Kerndimensionen markiert, d.h. die deskriptiven und normativen Momente eines solchen Terminus analysiert. Im Rahmen dieser begriffstheoretischen Annäherung werden vier zentrale Dimensionen sozialen Leidens identifiziert, welche für eine begriffsanalytische wie theoretisch abgesicherte Architektur sozialen Leidens notwendige Relevanz besitzen: 1. Soziales Leiden als sozialer Tatbestand 2. Soziales Leiden und seine normative Verortung 3. Soziales Leiden und dessen Kritik 4. Soziales Leiden und die Bedeutung von ,distanzierter Nähe'
