Daß es sich bei Gerhart Hauptmanns Atriden-Tetralogie um ein monumentales Alterswerk handelt, wird im allgemeinen nicht bestritten, aber ihre Deutung bietet Schwierigkeiten. Weithin hat sich die Ansicht durchgesetzt, in der Dramenfolge walte düsterer Fatalismus in Gestalt eines willenlosen Aktivismus, und im übrigen fehle ihre Einheit. In einer 1992 im selben Verlag erschienenen Arbeit - Antiker Mythos und Zeitgeschehen. Sinnstruktur und Zeitbezüge in Gerhart Hauptmanns Atriden-Tetralogie - wurde versucht, über eine detaillierte Analyse des Sinngefüges und dessen Vergleich mit dem Zeitgeschehen solche Vorstellungen zu überprüfen und zu revidieren. Vorliegende Arbeit, die als zweiter Band zu jener als erstem zu betrachten ist, soll im Anschluß daran die Zusammenhänge mit der Sage, den Vorgängern und Gerhart Hauptmanns Gesamtwerk klären. Probleme in der Entwicklung des alten Mythos, seiner Götter und ihres Kultes werden erörtert, ebenso Verbindungen zu Homer, Aischylos, Euripides und Goethe; der Einfluß Schillers wird hervorgehoben, die Bedeutung von Wilamowitz herausgestellt. Den Titel bildet eine deutende Übersetzung des Aischyleischen Spruches páthei máthos. Aus dem zweibändigen Werk möge hervorgehen, wie jenes zu ernster Besinnung auf rechtes Tun mahnende Wort aus dem Altertum in unser Jahrhundert weist.

A Space of Anxietyengages with a body of German-Jewish literature that, from the beginning of the century onwards, explores notions of identity and kinship in the context of migration, exile and persecution. The study offers an engaging analysis of how Freud, Kafka, Roth, Drach and Hilsenrath employ, to varying degrees, the travel paradigm to question those borders and boundaries that define the space between the self and the other. A Space of Anxietyargues that from Freud to Hilsenrath, German-Jewish literature emerges from an ambivalent space of enunciation which challenges the great narrative of an historical identity authenticated by an originary past. Inspired by postcolonial and psychoanalytic theories, the author shows that modern German-Jewish writers inhabit a Third Space which poses an alternative to an understanding of culture as a homogeneous tradition based on (national) unity.By endeavouring to explore this third space in examples of modern German-Jewish literature, the volume also aims to contribute to recent efforts to rewriting literary history. In retracing the inherent ambivalence in how German-Jewish literature situates itself in cultural discourse, this study focuses on how this literature subverts received notions of identity and racial boundaries. The study is of interest to students of German literature, German-Jewish literature and Cultural Studies.

This is Volume III in the Complete Works of Philipp Melanchthon. This new American English translation of Luther's 1528 "Unterricht der Visitatoren, an die Pfarrherrn im Kurfürstenthum zu Sachsen" or "Instructions for the Visitors of Parish Pastors in Electoral Saxony", followed by his 1522 Enchiridion. Together these make up his core works on the subject of education, earning him the title given by Luther: "Germany's teacher". The original German texts follow the English translation for easy reference and this edition contains a new 2023 Afterword by the Translator. Melanchthon’s 1522 Enchiridion sought to teach theology in the family home as a replacement for the state-run religious institutions. Named after Augustine's Enchiridion, which in turn was named after Epictetus' Enchiridion, Melanchthon sought to provide an ethical foundation for Protestantism, which was in disarray. The rampant Antinomianism which rejected all “legalism” and stated there is no moral code to which Christians should adhere to caused a related problem for the reformation. Knowledge of the Ten Commandments and the Old Testament was key to fixing this problem to Melanchthon, so together with Luther they published extensive educational reforms and school material. The Elector of Saxony saw this sorry state of affairs in Protestant Germany in terms of education, and asked Luther to fix it. Melanchthon took lead, and issued this 1527 Instructions for the Visitors of Parish Pastors in Electoral Saxony, and visited the local churches. A great deal of Melanchthon’s work was in the field of education, leading to his title of "Germany's teacher".
