Der osterreichische Schriftsteller und Diplomat Leopold von Andrian (1875-1951) wurde bislang vor allem als Autor eines Kultbuches des Wiener Fin de Siecle, "Der Garten der Erkenntnis", und als Freund Hugo von Hofmannsthals rezipiert. Die Auswahledition von Tagebucheintragungen, Essays, politischen Berichten sowie Briefen von und an Andrian beleuchtet allerdings die verschiedenen Felder, auf denen sich Andrian bewegte: seine Rolle als Akteur auf dem diplomatischen Parkett zwischen 1900 und 1918 in Rio de Janeiro, Athen, St. Petersburg, Bukarest und Warschau sowie sein kulturpolitisches Engagement als Intendant der k. k. Hoftheater. Die Konzeption einer ruckwarts gewandten Osterreich-Utopie als Gegenstrategie zum Nationalsozialismus, die der Monarchist und Legitimist nach 1918 entwarf und im franzosischen und brasilianischen Exil fortsetzte, zahlt zu den bedeutendsten Arbeiten der Zwischenkriegszeit zum Themenkreis Osterreich-Identitat; nach 1945 wurden sie als Beitrag zum osterreichischen Nationsbildungsprozess rezipiert. Traces literary developments in the German-speaking countries from 1900 to the present. This study of German literature in the past hundred years sets its subject clearly in the artistic and political context of developments in Western Europe during the century. A founder of contemporary social science, Max Weber was born in Germany in 1864.
