Die Neugierde bringt ihn dazu, sich mit neuen, ihm unbekannten Dingen und Sachverhalten zu beschäftigen, um seinen Wissenshorizont beständig zu erweitern. Dieser Prozess wird als Lernen bezeichnet. Von kleinen und großen Erfolgserlebnissen angetrieben, erlernt ein Mensch bis hin zu seinem Tod immer wieder neue Dinge. Lernen ist somit ein Prozess, der nie endet und der auch nie enden sollte, da Lernen Spaß macht. Treten dabei jedoch erhebliche Schwierigkeiten und mehr Misserfolge als Erfolge auf, wird Lernen schnell zur Belastung. Im schulischen Kontext spricht man dann von Lernschwierigkeiten. Der Begriff Lernschwierigkeiten beschreibt anhaltende Probleme beim Lernen und bedeutet, dass Leistungsanforderungen in verschiedenen Bereichen über eine gewisse Dauer nicht erfüllt werden. Lernschwierigkeiten treten beispielsweise in Form von Problemen beim Rechnen, Schreiben und Lesen auf, wobei die Schwierigkeiten des Lesens und Schreibens häufig in kombinierter Form vorkommen. Dann spricht man von Lese-Rechtschreibschwierigkeiten oder auch einer Lese-Rechtschreibschwäche. Diese Schwäche ist besonders gravierend, denn wenn ein Schüler nicht gut lesen und/oder schreiben kann, wird er auch Probleme in anderen Schulfächern bekommen. Die Kompetenzen Lesen und Schreiben sind in allen Schulfächern vertreten und Grundvoraussetzung dafür, Aufgabenstellungen richtig zu erfassen und zu bearbeiten. Aus diesem Grund ist es wichtig, dass Lehrer über Lese-Rechtschreibschwierigkeiten Bescheid wissen und in der Lage sind, im Sinne des Kindes zu handeln. Es ist Aufgabe dieser Seminararbeit, einen allgemeinen Überblick über Lese-Rechtschreibschwierigkeiten zu geben und den Leser über verschiedene wichtige Aspekte zu informieren. Dabei liegt das Augenmerk vor allem auf der Fragestellung, welche besonderen Probleme im Zusammenhang mit dem Erlernen von Fremdsprachen auftreten können und wie man dem als Fremdsprachenlehrer auf faire Art und Weise begegnen kann.

In this study, originally published in 1986, Professor Charles Read examines the ways in which pre-school and primary children create spellings – or misspellings, as they appear to be. He focuses on the hidden phonetic bases for some frequent patterns in young children’s spelling, both in and out of school. Professor Read examines children’s spelling in other languages (Dutch, French, Spanish) as well as in various dialects of English, in order to see the influence of other sets of speech sounds and other standard spelling systems.
