Ce livre étudie une classe d?adjectifs du grec ancien, dits sigmatiques parce qu?ils se terminent par le phonème /s/ (sigma). Il y a eu en indo-européen des noms de genre neutre caractérisés par un suffixe *-e/os-, comme *génos± naissance? ou *wékwos± parole?. Ces noms ont pu être employés en second membre de composé dans des adjectifs comme grec eu-genes± de bonne naissance? ou hêdu-epes± aux douces paroles?. À côté de ces adjectifs composés, il y a eu en grec d?autres composés sigmatiques, dont le second membre est en relation synchronique non pas avec un nom, mais avec une base verbale : dans sunekhes on voit la racine de ékho± tenir?, dans aphanescelle du verbe phaínomai± apparaître?. Si la première catégorie continue un système indo-européen, ce n?est pas le cas de la seconde.

How can we explain metrical irregularities in Homeric phrases like ἀνδροτῆτα καὶ ἥβην? What do such phrases tell us about the antiquity of the epic tradition? And how did doublet forms such as τέτρατος beside τέταρτος originate? In this book, you will find the first systematic and complete account of the syllabic liquids in Ancient Greek. It provides an up-to-date, comprehensive and innovative etymological treatment of material from all dialects, including Mycenaean. A new model of linguistic change in the epic tradition is used to tackle two hotly-debated problems: metrical irregularities in Homer (including muta cum liquida) and the double reflex. The proposed solution has important consequences for Greek dialect classification and the prehistory of Epic language and meter.

Les adjectifs grecs du type de hedus constituent en grec ancien une catégorie peu productive (moins de 40 unités), cohérente et constituée dès la préhistoire de la langue. Certains d'entre eux, comme barus "lourd" ou okus "rapide", appartiennent au plus vieux fonds du vocabulaire indo-européen. Aussi l'étude est-elle orientée en grande partie vers la grammaire comparée des langues indoeuropéennes, et nombre d'étymologies nouvelles sont proposées (ainsi pour ligus "sonore", bradus "lent" ou takhus "rapide"). On se propose de montrer que le suffixe d'adjectif -u- avait en indoeuropéen une double fonction, que le grec a conservée fidèlement: (1) fonction syntaxique: formation d'adjectifs sur thèmes verbaux de valeur stative, et notamment sur thèmes de parfait, ce fait étant en relation avec le lien morphologique qui unit le suffixe -u- d'adjectif au participe parfait i.e. en -we os-. Contrairement à une idée largement répandue, les adjectifs en -u- ne sont pas, au moins dans leur principe, des dérivés primaires, mais des formations secondaires. (2) fonction sémantique: formation d'adjectifs dans un champ déterminé du lexique, celui des dimensions et des qualités physiques. De là découle la propriété qu'ont ces adjectifs de s'associer par couples antonymiques, ainsi oksus barus "aigu grave", takhus bradus "rapide lent", et bien d'autres du même type. Ce principe de fonctionnement se retrouve dans d'autres langues indoeuropéennes, à preuve en hittite assus idalus "bon mauvais", en sanskrit uru- amhu- "large étroit" ou guru- laghu- "lourd léger" (cf. en latin gravis levis), et bien d'autres exemples. Il apparait, en fin de compte, qu'une partie notable du vocabulaire fondamental de l'indoeuropéen était fortement structurée sur le plan du signifiant.

The Orphic Hymns consist of a prooemium and 87 hymns addressed to several deities in a late Orphic initiation of sorts. They were composed probably in Asia Minor during the second or third century CE. The bulk of these hymns are made up of divine epithets often linked together in chains of considerable length. The lexicon attempts to give a comprehensive account of the roughly 850 epithets, bringing together the most relevant information scattered in the scholarly literature and adding others from various sources (literary, epigraphic, lexicographic, scholia etc.) in order to provide an overview of their usage and the main details of their models.
