L'école maternelle installe et développe chez l'enfant une pratique créative à partir de situations et de supports sollicitant son imagination, l'amenant à exercer sa capacité d'invention et à enrichir ses formes d'expression. Ces pratiques font partie du domaine intitulé, dans les programmes 2002, " la sensibilité, l'imagination, la création ". À travers les 80 activités proposées dans cet ouvrage, l'enfant est amené à explorer différents " langages plastiques " et à se constituer une première culture artistique. Les activités sont organisées autour de six grands axes : Activités graphiques : constitution d'un " éventail " de formes graphiques, réalisation de patchworks, de graphismes sur céramique... ; Carnet de croquis : propre à chaque enfant, ce carnet permet de dessiner des esquisses, garder trace de sorties... ; Atelier de peinture : 25 activités à base de peinture, de la fabrication des couleurs aux cartes à gratter en passant par différents effets de matière... ; Collage et assemblage : avec du papier, du tissu, du plâtre, de la mosaïque, mais aussi des objets et des matériaux de récupération... ; Tout en volume : pour réaliser des œuvres en volume avec du plâtre, de l'argile, de la pierre, du fil de fer... ; Atelier d'artistes : pour observer plus particulièrement certaines œuvres d'artistes classiques (Manet, Cézanne) ou contemporains (Dubuffet, Cragg...). Pour chaque activité sont donnés les objectifs, la liste du matériel, le nombre d'enfants par groupe préconisé et la durée indicative de la séance. La démarche est concrètement explicitée en plusieurs étapes, toutes illustrées à la fois par des schémas qui exposent la démarche et par des reproductions d'œuvres d'enfants.
