Dans ce roman, Dumas se veut avant tout historien et ne cède pas à son imagination parfois débridée : foin des inventions historiques, ici, c'est du sérieux... mais écrit avec la plume de Dumas, toujours aussi passionnante. Bien qu'écrit après «Les Compagnons de Jehu», ce roman se situe juste avant dans la chronologie de l'histoire. Et il s'agit en fait d'une trilogie qui se conclut avec «Le chevalier de Sainte-Hermine», publié pour la première fois en 2005, et que vous ne pourrez donc lire qu'en édition papier...

(11th of December, 1793), the diligence from Besancon to Strasbourg stopped at nine o'clock in the evening in the courtyard of the Hotel de la Poste, behind the cathedral. Five travellers descended from it, but the youngest only merits our attention.
