Si de nombreux ouvrages ont été consacrés à l'économie de la transition, et de l'après-communisme, celui-ci est, probablement, le premier essai cherchant à dégager les causes économiques de la chute de l'URSS. L'effondrement de l'économie et de la société soviétiques, reste énigmatique. C'est la première fois dans l'histoire, qu'un grand empire se disloque, sans que cela soit provoqué par une défaite militaire ou une guerre civile. Les fondements du système soviétique se sont évaporés, remis en cause même par les dirigeants du Parti communiste, alors que dix ou quinze ans auparavant, beaucoup d'observateurs et d'économistes opposaient ses succès en matière d'inflation et de chômage à la crise des pays capitalistes. L'auteur cherche, d'abord, si les mouvements profonds de l'économie - depuis 1928 - peuvent expliquer le déclin économique. Il s'attache aussi à mettre en relief la part du conjoncturel et de la politique économique suivie pendant la perestroïka. L'ensemble des facteurs, à long et court terme, est replacé dans une explication générale de la crise, analysée à l'aide d'un modèle socio-économique faisant la synthèse des théories du totalitarisme, et de l'économie administrée.

Militant Islam provides a sociological framework for understanding the rise and character of recent Islamic militancy. The rise of China is no doubt one of the most important events in world economic history since the Industrial Revolution. Mainstream economics, especially the institutional theory of economic development based on a dichotomy of extractive vs. inclusive political institutions, is highly inadequate in explaining China's rise. This book argues that only a radical reinterpretation of the history of the Industrial Revolution and the rise of the West (as incorrectly portrayed by the institutional theory) can fully explain China's growth miracle and why the determined rise of China is unstoppable despite its current 'backward' financial system and political institutions. Conversely, China's spectacular and rapid transformation from an impoverished agrarian society to a formidable industrial superpower sheds considerable light on the fundamental shortcomings of the institutional theory and mainstream 'blackboard' economic models, and provides more-accurate reevaluations of historical episodes such as Africa's enduring poverty trap despite radical political and economic reforms, Latin America's lost decades and frequent debt crises, 19th century Europe's great escape from the Malthusian trap, and the Industrial Revolution itself.

The purpose of this text is to provide the Army with a factual account of the organization and operations of the Soviet resistance movement behind the German forces on the Eastern Front during World War II. This movement offers a particularly valuable case study, for it can be viewed both in relation to the German occupation in the Soviet Union and to the offensive and defensive operations of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. The scope of the study includes an over-all picture of a quasi-military organization in relation to a larger conflict between two regular armies. It is not a study in partisan tactics, nor is it intended to be. German measures taken to combat the partisan movement are sketched in, but the story in large part remains that of an organization and how it operated. The German planning for the invasion of Russia is treated at some length because many of the circumstances which favored the rise and development of the movement had their bases in errors the Germans made in their initial planning. The operations of the Wehrmacht and the Red Army are likewise described in considerable detail as the backdrop against which the operations of the partisan units are projected. Because of the lack of reliable Soviet sources, the story has been told much as the Germans recorded it. German documents written during the course of World War II constitute the principal sources, but many survivors who had experience in Russia have made important contributions based upon their personal experience.

Deals with antisemitic propaganda in the late Soviet and post-Soviet periods, when the term "Khazars" was used as a euphemism for Jews. Explores the image of the Jewish Khazars in the rhetoric and worldview of contemporary Russian nationalists and their ethnocentric myths of the past and the "Russian idea." Clarifies these antisemites' view of a world Jewish conspiracy, explaining the resort to the Khazars as symbols of supposed Jewish domination of Russia from the time of Kievan Rus through the epoch of the Russian Revolution and Bolshevik dictatorship (with Stalin seen as a pawn of the Jew Kaganovich) until the breakup of the Soviet Union - the Jews are blamed for all these calamities. The "Khazar version" of Russian history was touted by "patriotic" nationalists in periodicals, by such archaeologists as Gumilev, and by nationalistic writers of science fiction and belles lettres. Some of these writers highlighted the role of the Khazars in subjugating the Slavs; others stressed world Zionism as a new Khazar plot. These ideas even penetrated the Russian educational system. The myth of the Khazars also attracted Ukrainian nationalists (pp. 148-159).
