De manière globale, la conjoncture économique internationale en 2002 a été marquée par des incertitudes, ce qui s'est traduit par une nouvelle perte de vitalité de l'économie mondiale, avec une érosion du taux de croissance. En dépit de cette conjoncture quelque peu défavorable, les pays d'Afrique Centrale ont affiché des résultats globalement positifs. L'assainissement de l'environnement macro-économique s'est poursuivi dans la presque totalité des pays, comme le montrent les niveaux des déficits budgétaires et des taux d'inflation. Le taux de croissance du PIB réel de la sous-région, estimé à 5,8% en 2002, pourrait être le plus élevé du continent. Cependant, ce taux cache des disparités entre les pays aussi bien en termes de rythme que de soutenabilité de la croissance. Par ailleurs, cette croissance reste en deçà du seuil minimum pour réduire la pauvreté de moitié d'ici en 2015. Cet ouvrage présente l'évolution de la situation économique et sociale en 2002 dans la région d'Afrique Centrale. La deuxième partie de ce rapport consacrée au secteur privé, fait le constat d'une insuffisante participation de ce secteur au développement des pays. Les enquêtes menées auprès d'un échantillon représentatif des acteurs du secteur privé et institutionnel des pays de la sous-région, soulignent les contraintes structurelles ou politiques. Des recommandations sont formulées afin de faire du secteur privé un moteur de la croissance et du développement dans la sous-région.

This edited collection brings together a broad range of case studies to highlight the role of Canadian corporations in producing, deepening and exacerbating conditions of dispossession both at home and abroad. Rather than presented as instances of exceptional greed or malice, the cases are described as expected and inherent consequences of contemporary capitalism and/or settler colonialism. A core purpose of the book is to combine and synthesize analyses of dispossession within and outside of Canada. While the literature tends to treat the two as distinct and unrelated phenomena, these processes are often connected, as the normalization of settler colonialism at home can lead to indifference and acceptance of dispossession caused by Canadian companies abroad. This book brings local and global cases together in order to present a rigorous analysis of the role of Canadian corporate activity in processes of dispossession. The book includes a diversity of theoretical approaches related to the overarching theme of capitalism and dispossession; however, they share a critical analysis of capitalism and its implications on marginalized peoples at home and abroad. This ambitious volume explores the politics of recent changes in corporate governance regulation and the transnational forces driving the process. Corporate governance has in the 1990s become a catchphrase of the global business community. The Enron collapse and other recent corporate scandals, as well as growing worries in Europe about the rise of Anglo-Saxon finance, have made issues of corporate governance the subject of political controversies and of public debate. The contributors argue that the regulation of corporate governance is an inherently political affair. Given the context of the deepening globalization of the corporate world, it is also increasingly a transnational phenomenon. In terms of the content of regulation the book shows an increasing reliance on the application of market mechanisms and a tendency for corporations themselves to become commodities.
