"'Les Constitutions apostoliques' sont l'œuvre d'un groupe qui a recueilli à Antioche, à la fin du IVe siècle, les traditions et les écrits qui pouvaient faire loi pour les chrétiens. Elles sont réparties en huit Livres. Le livre I est destiné aux laïcs ; le livre II se rapporte aux évêques et au clergé, avec une mine de renseignements pour l'histoire de la pénitence dans l'Église ancienne. Les livres I et II comme source la Didascalie, ou "Doctrine des douze Apôtres". Cupidité, amour du prochain, coquetterie, lecture, mauvaises fréquentations, bains, querelles : le livre I, le plus court de tous avec le livre IV, livre ses conseils aux laïcs en dix petits chapitres. S'intéressent aux évêques, presbytres et diacres, le livre II est à l'inverse celui qui a le plus grand nombre de chapitres : 63. Dignité épiscopale, pénitence, sacerdoce et diaconat, biens ecclésiastiques, procédures, liturgie : autant de sujets importants, où le spirituel se mêle à l'institutionnel. Tome II des 'Constitutions apostoliques' comprend les livres III à VI. Les livres III à VI sont la suite du remaniement de la Didascalie, ou "Doctrine des douze Apôtres", commencée aux livres I et II. Le livre III est principalement consacré aux veuves, avec quelques chapitres sur l'assistance aux pauvres, l'interdiction des ministères ecclésiastiques aux femmes et aux laïcs, le baptême, les diaconesses et les diacres. Le très court livre IV est dévolu orphelins, mais aussi aux dons, à l'éducation des enfants, aux relations entre maîtres et serviteurs, à la soumission aux autorités, aux vierges. Le livre V, sur les martyrs, aborde la solidarité avec les frères persécutés, le sort des apostats, le sens du martyre, la foi en la résurrection, la digne célébration de Pâques et du temps pascal. Le livre VI traite des schismes, en donnant en exemple Moïse et en contre-exemple Simon le Mage, en précisant la doctrine apostolique et le rapport avec la Loi juive ainsi qu'avec des pratiques païennes et en considérant pour finir l'éthique sexuelle, la vie conjugale et le culte funéraire. Ce tome III achève les 'Constitutions apostoliques'. Il y est question, dans le Livre VII, du comportement chrétien vis-à-vis de la violence et de la sexualité, du dol et du vol, de l'injustice et de l'impiété. Mais surtout, le chrétien est invité, dans les actes de la vie quotidienne, à pratiquer l'action de grâce. C'est l'occasion pour l'auteur de citer d'admirables prières où la louange emporte dans ses eaux, comme un grand fleuve, les souvenirs et les pensées les plus élevées de l'Ancien et du Nouveau Testament, pierres et perles qui ruissellent de la belle lumière des premiers âges liturgiques. Au Livre VIII, on remarque les prières qui accompagnent le cérémonial des différentes ordinations (évêques, prêtres, diacres), celles qui valent pour les temps et les choses de la journée, celles de la liturgie des défunts... On lira avec grand soin les 85 "canons apostoliques" qui réglèrent, en christianisme, toute chose pour de longs siècles, jusqu'à ce que la discipline ecclésiastique, atteinte par des circonstances nouvelles, en vienne aux transformations nécessaires. Ce troisième volume des 'Constitutions apostoliques' se termine par l'Index biblique des huit Livres, par un Index des thèmes et un autre des principaux termes grecs rencontrés. M. Beginning with "spiritual" interpretation and anti-Judaic polemic to secure the Pesach institution narrative (Ex 12) for Christian proclamation, major centers of Asia Minor and Syria, then Upper Egypt and the West, develop distinct rhetorical structures that load first the day, then the date of Pascha, with theological meaning. The emergence of the four-gospel canon at the end of the second century enriches, but does not supplant, a dialogue between Christian rituals and the scriptures inherited from Judaism. The Antenicene Pascha takes a fresh approach to the scattered literary remains of the earliest paschal feast by acknowledging them for what they are: relics of heated disputes about ritual boundaries that had elevated the Pascha, an observance with no explicite reference in first century literature, to an icon of unity and orthodoxy at the Council of Nicaea.
