La contamination chimique de l'estuaire de la Seine par les contaminants organiques (HAP, PCB, pesticides) a été étudiée pour déterminer leurs sources, concentrations, comportement et devenir géochimiques. Les résultats placent l'estuaire de la Seine parmi les estuaires européens les plus contaminés. Les concentrations plus élevées à l'amont pour la plupart des composés désignent des sources continentales. Des sources internes de HAP sont également identifiées. Les contaminants étudiés montrent des comportements géochimiques très contrastés au cours de leur transport estuarien. Les herbicides triazines et leurs produits de dégradation transitent à l'état dissous de façon conservative dans l'estuaire. Les PCB montrent une dynamique complexe. La phase particulaire joue un rôle essentiel dans leur distribution à l'équilibre, perturbée dans la zone de mélange par les forts gradients physico-chimiques. La contamination élevée et chronique de l'estuaire soulève la question de ses effets sur les organismes et les ressources écologiques.
